I would discuss about.
  • What is KM..
  • - Knowledge Types, KM Process, Components,
  • Creation, Framework, Environment, etc.
  • KM Systems.
  • - Contents, Components, Evaluation etc.
  • KM Tools
  • - Technologies, Categories, Examples etc.
  • Webliography

About Knowledge..
  • "Knowledge" actually resides with people.
  • Knowledge creation occurs in the process of
interaction between the people sharing their
    experiences and information sources.
  • Types of Knowledge..
  • Explicit - consists of anything that can be
documented, archived, codified and be expressed
    in words.examples being patents, trademarks,
business plans, marketing research , product
    specifications, manuals, universal principles,
    and so forth
  • Tacit - not easily visible and expressible. Tacit
knowledge is highly personal and hard to
    formalise. Subjective insights, intuitions and
    hunches fall into this category

4
KM-Defined.
  • Knowing what you Know.
  • "The ability to utilise the available knowledge
resources effectively, and in a timely manner,
    for organisation benefit or advantage".
  • Points to Ponder..
  • Focus of KM is on 'doing the right thing' instead
    of 'doing things right.
  • KM is often facilitated by IT, technology by
    itself is not KM.
  • Information management is a subset of KM.

KM Process

KM Systems.
  • A KM System (KMS) is the software framework that
    assists, via knowledge processing functions,
those who desire to formulate and retrieve
    knowledge for different applications.It attempts
to capture the tacit information embedded in an
organization, and make it explicit .
  • Components of a KMS
  • Knowledge Capturing
  • Knowledge Organising
  • Knowledge Classifying and understanding
  • Knowledge Debugging and editing
  • Knowledge Finding and retrieving
  • Knowledge Disseminating, transferring and sharing.

8
  • Typical Contents of a KMS
  • Factual/Procedural knowledge (e.g., manuals)
  • Best practices
  • Discussion databases
  • Corporate yellow pages/directories
  • Archives (digital and paper)
  • Organizational culture
  • Experiential learning gained by past projects
  • Knowledge Directory, providing pointers to
    expertise available within the organization
  • web-based virtual classroom
  • Official policies, press releases and web-based
    in-house information systems etc.
  • Evaluation of a KMS.
  • Ease of use
  • Domain independence
  • Efficient and effective indexing support (machine
    aided or automatic)
  • Response efficiency
  • Presentation of results
  • User and database (knowledge base) services.
  • Security

9
KM Tools/Software..
  • KM tools usually utilise Intranet Groupware
    Technologies.
  • Most organizations use custom-developed KM
    solutionsfor e.g., Infosys, Andersen, Ernst
    Young and McKinsey.
  • Categories-Knowledge repositories, Expertise
    access tools, E-learning applications, Discussion
and Chat technologies, Search and Data mining
    tools, Enterprise Information Portals etc.
  • Examples- Lotus Knowledge Discovery System,
Stratify Discovery system, IBM EIP, LexiQuest,
IBM Content Manager, Lotus Notes etc.
