2TEACHER TIPS
You will need to click the mouse to show answers
for activities. This will allow you to control
the timing of answers shown.
We suggest that students keep a journal.
It is critical for students to use writing skills
to explain their answers.
Take time to discuss possible solutions to
problems.
3These lessons are designed to reinforce the State
Science Standards.
Heat/Cold
The atmosphere has physical properties that are
measurable and predictable.(VI A4)
Heat causes materials to increase in temperature
and feel warmer, or change state (gas, liquid or
solid). (III C2)
Warm objects lose heat to cooler ones until they
reach the same temperature. (III C3)
4These activities will address the following
Hazelwood Objectives for fifth grade
Heat/Cold
Demonstrate the effects of heat on air
Be able to tell that hot air is lighter than cold
air
5In your science journal, make a list of the
advantages and disadvantages of heat rising and
cool air sinking.
6Sample Journal
Advantages
Since heat rises, we can use it for
transportation.
Since heat rises, it keeps our earth at a
desirable temperature by carrying some heat away.
Since cool air sinks, the house stays cooler on
floor level during the summer.
Since heat rises, in a fire, the cool air will be
at ground level. This is why you should crawl
out of a fire.
7Sample Journal
Disadvantages
Since heat rises, its more difficult to keep
warm in the winter, because the heat goes to the
ceiling.
Since heat rises, in a fire, the smoke and heat
all travel up to where we breathe when standing.
Since heat rises, and cool air sinks, sometimes
damaging weather results.
