Title: The Black Duck
1The Black Duck
2Heres a little information
- Member of the Anatinae family
- Observed on August 25, 2007 between 1250 and
145 - Pictures taken at the Swift Creek Reservoir
- Habitat consists of the lake itself and the
surrounding shoreline
3The black duck spends the majority of their time
in the water. They spend most of the time
feeding in the shallows waters of lakes and ponds.
4Man its cold
- The Black duck has two layers of feathers. An
outer layer that is waterproof and an inner layer
to keep them warm.
5The Black duck is a dabbling duck. This means
that it submerges its head into the water to
catch small prey in the shallow water. Because
the ducks can only catch food at shallow water,
the black duck must stay near the shoreline.
6My legs could use a stretch
- Like most other ducks, the black ducks webbed
feet allows it to forage on both water and the
land. Its feet also allow the duck to move
quickly through the water to catch food and
escape from predators.
7The black duck tend to swim in groups in order to
protect themselves. Due to the fact that they
must keep their head underwater to feed. A group
is needed to warn the others if a predator
attacks them.
8Heres a few pictures of the Black Duck in its
habitat.
9What I learned
- Through careful observation I believe I have a
better understanding of the Black Duck. They have
developed multiple advantages to allow them to
survive in the cold waters of Americas lakes.
One of which is its layers of levels of feathers
and the group dynamic to protect them from
predators. I am very happy I choose to research
the Black duck for my Science project.
