1
  • By Khym Redford
  • Period-6

2
Life
  • Born in St. Louis 1933.
  • Bay Area known sculptor.
  • He studied at Princeton University, Black
Mountain College, and the University of
    California.
  • Taught at the San Francisco Art Institute.

3
Work
  • Angel was one of his most famous sculptures.
  • It is located on Market Street in San Francisco.
  • it reads as an elegy for the waning of humanism,
in the symbolic form of a ruined angel.
  • It was created for the entrance of the Parks
    Library.
  • 8 feet high on a 6 feet base.

4
MORE on the Angel!
  • The Left sided Angel is directly in front of the
    Library for all to see.
  • The fact that the Angel is battered and bruised
    makes it so beautiful.
  • It only has one wing.

5
Standing man with outstretched arm.
  • Made in 1987.
  • Bronze Sculpture.
  • placed on center with the bridge, and within the
center of the Exedra paved space
  • Both this piece of art work and the Angel both
    are battered and bruised.
  • Also both have only one leg.

Figure Columns.
  • The fractured human figure has been the subject
of Stephen De Staeblers sculpture for many
    years.
  • The sculpture was later enlarged.
  • Now standing at almost 6 feet.
  • There are many different volumes to the figure
columns, he created more than one.

9
Figure ColumnsIII,VII,VIII,XI.2001.
10
Quotes.
  • I have discovered that the unasked-for accident
can be the salvation of what you are doing.
  • There is an investment of your own life
experience in something as innocent as color.

11
Hand with the Blue Nails.
  • Ceramic.
  • Made in 1976.

12
Fact for Fun!!!!
  • Why did he became a sculptor rather than a
painter. He responded, "Because I had been a
basketball player." He explained that in
basketball one relies on peripheral vision to
pass or receive the ball to or from teammates on
either side or even behind. A sculptor needs far
more peripheral vision than a painter, for in
sculpting one must be aware simultaneously of the
many sides of a sculpture. Sculpture is more of a
hands on experience you truly get to feel the art
in your finger tips. You can create something
    from scratch, something meaningless into
something outstanding and full of power.
