    etc.
  3. If euthanatized, record method and agent used

8
MEDICAL RECORDS (cont.)
  • All records must be available but do not have to
be in one place, just make sure that the Vivarium
knows where your records are being kept. USDA
requires that the medical record be located
    within 24 hours.
  • Records for routine treatment may be kept as
group records rather than individual records.
  • Note should also be taken that verify daily
observation of all animals. This record can take
many forms a check list, for example. In most
cases the Vivarium will be doing this
    anyway.

9
DOS AND DONTS
  • Do use the disinfectant mat before entering the
    Vivarium
  • Do wear a Lab Coat or Scrubs while in the
    Vivarium
  • Dont prop entry/exit doors or leave overhead
    doors open for any reason
  • Dont eat or drink in any animal area or
    laboratory.
  • Dont bring personal or clinic animals into the
    Vivarium

10
PRE-SURGICAL PROCEDURES
  • Animals that are to have food and/or water
withheld prior to surgery must have a no food
    sign placed on their pen/cage/pen.
  • In addition there is a white erase board outside
of 133D where the animals name, P/I name and
date of no food needs to be written down.
  • All animals are normally fed by 8 a.m.

11
TREATMENT PROCEDURES
  • Treatment sheets can be found in G139A or link to
    copy of this ..\..\Forms\treatment sheet2.doc
  • Vivarium staff will take care of a.m.
    non-injectable treatments only.
  • Extra treatments will need to be provided by P/I
    technicians or R.A.T.T.S personnel (contact
    Marlee Richter).
  • According to IACUC guidelines, your animal needs
to be seen and evaluated within 24 hours of
notification of an abnormality. If the time
period comes due and your animal has not be
attended to then the University Attending
Veterinarian will be contacted. The animal will
then be seen, evaluated and, if necessary,
    treated through this department.
  • A health report on the Vivarium animals is sent
to the University Attending Veterinarian weekly
in order to keep him/her updated and aware of any
    health problems.

12
ANIMAL REMOVAL

When taking an animal out of the Vivarium please
let us know. This can be done in several
ways. 1. Turn the animals picture ID (hanging on
its pen or door)around so that the photo is
facing in. This signals us that you have the
animal. And/or 2. Write on the
white erase board that the animal is with you.
And/or 3. Let one of the Vivarium
staff know verbally
13
TAGGING OF RECOVERIES
  • A recovering from anesthesia card needs to be
filled out and placed on the recovery pen or
cage, after the animal is returned.

14
POST-SURGICAL PROCEDURES
  • The P/Is, Technicians,Veterinary students or
    R.A.T.T.S. personnel are responsible for
providing post-operative care during the first 24
    hour recovery period.
  • All medical records MUST be placed into the
individual animals record or on clipboard
  • It is always a wise idea to alert the Vivarium
    personnel to what post-operative complications
may occur and what to watch for.

15
FINAL DISPOSTION OF ANIMALS
  • When an animal is adopted, transferred or
euthanitized the vivarium must be informed. This
is when the animal will be discharged from your
per diem. An e-mail will be sent to you
    confirming the discharge.
  • There is a clipboard by G133D entitled Animal
    Disposition. Please fill this out.

16
BREEDING LOG
  • Breedings must be recorded on the clipboard
containing the breeding log (by 133D).
  • Please note which stud was used and the date.
