The Apostrophe
In this cell, the two separate uses of an
apostrophe are explained. These are i) to show
that a letter is missing and ii) to show
ownership or possession. Please note that an
apostrophe is NEVER used to form a plural.

The Apostrophe Apostrophes are used to show
ownership. Here, for example, is a girl and she
owns a pony. This ownership can be shown by using
an apostrophe. The girls pony
The apostrophe is used to show that the
pony belongs to the girl.
The pony belongs to the girl (singular), so the
apostrophe is placed before the letter s.

Here are two girls that have built a sandcastle.
The sandcastle belongs to the girls. This
ownership can be shown by using an
apostrophe. The girls sandcastle
The apostrophe is used to show that the
sandcastle belongs to the girl.
The sandcastle belongs to the girls (plural), so
the apostrophe is placed after the letter s.
