Overview
In late 1989, a decision was made to exploit the
Moab mineral resource. Development at Moab
Khotsong commenced in 1991.

Mine Design
  • Ore body situated between 2,000m and 3,800m below
    surface
  • The geological structure is complex and
highly-faulted with large fault loss areas
  • It was decided to site the new shaft in Great
Noligwas lease area. This provided the
opportunity of extracting the shaft pillar before
the shaft was excavated and equipped but required
the development of long access tunnels to reef
  • The main surface shaft and subvertical RV shaft
has been sunk and will be equipped down to a
depth of 2,300m and 3,164m respectively

Growth Moab Phase 2
In South Africa, the dramatically higher rand
gold price has contributed to a further 11
million additional ounces of gold to reserves,
resulting in the possible development of six
deep-level mining projects, currently being
studied. AngloGold quarterly results31 October,

Growth Moab Phase 2
Moab Phase 2 below 101 level means an
additional 4.6Moz of gold production should this
project go ahead. Moab Khotsong has the
potential to produce some 9Moz from the Phase 1
and 2 projects.Capex for Moab Phase 2 is
estimated at approximately R1.8bn. It will also
extend the LOM from 2015 2022. A full
feasibility study into this project is expected
to commence in 2003.
