Eruption in Heimaey

• On the morning of Tuesday 23rd January, 1973, at
  1.55.a.m., an   eruption began from a 1600-metre
  fissure on the eastern side of Heimaey in   the
  Vestmann Islands. The eruption came without
  warning and was totally   unexpected. A few mild
  shocks had been felt from 10 p.m. that night, the
  sharpest of them   occurring at 1.40 a.m. On
  Monday night, 22nd January, people in Heimaey
    went to bed at the usual time, as on a normal
  weekday.

• We were very lucky because all the boats were in
  harbour, for during the day there had been a
    south-  easterly gale, force 12, with rainfall.
  Just before 2 a.m. there was   a telephone call
  to the police station in the town centre .
  Information was   received that an eruption had
  started a short distance above and east of
    Kirkjubær," the church farm" at the easternmost
  end of the town.

When do they come?

• At August/September night, the lights of the town
  attract the young birds so they spread their
  wings and glide down from the mountains in their
  hundreds.
• The local children, who are allowed to stay out
  late on these August nights, are everywhere with
  helping hands.

• The children choose good site where the birds
  have easy access to the sea, and then the birds
  are taken out of their boxes one by one, and
  thrown high into the air. They can then glide
  towards the sea and their freedom.

  went under the lava are being dug up.

• The summer of 1627, pirate ships came to
  Vestmannaeyjar, from north-Africa. The pillagers
  were in 2 groups, the first group was from the
  city Sale in Marocco, they came shortly before a
  festival started, called Jónsmessa. The other
  group was from Algeirsborg, they came to the
  island shortly aftert he first group came. At the
  same time, Dutchland and the british people were
  in confict with Spain. Both the britains and the
  dutch.
