Overview
This panel will look at some nursing standards of
practice to make sure Job Corps centers are
following current State Board practices in the
state in which they are located

General Statement
Topics discussed will represent areas of health
care practice, particularly nursing practice

General Statement (continued)
All center health services and providers shall
follow their states accepted Professional
Standards of Care and remember that they are
subject to prevailing state laws. (PRH-6 6.12,
R5)

Role of License Practical Nurses (LPN)
  • LPN may perform most nursing duties under the
    direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN)
  • The Standards of Practice ratio for all Job Corps
    centers located in Region I is 12 (1 RN for
    every 2 LPNs)

  • See Standards of Practice documents for each
    state in the region
  • RN (physician or dentist) must be in the unit at
    the time duties are performed by an LPN

Unit Doses
  • Under the law a RN may pour a single dose from a
    multiple dose bottle and give it to a client per
    the written order of a physician or dentist
  • Legal under a RN license

  • The RN may not pour multiple doses and give them
    to the patient to take later on as this
    constitutes a dispensing function under the law
    to be performed by a pharmacist, physician, or
    dentist
  • In an emergency, a RN can give a single dose
    medication to a patient and/or get a verbal
    telephone order from the the physician or dentist
    (written order is latter attached to the verbal
    order)
