Who is Robert Hanseen ?
  • Born on April 18, 1944 In Evergreen Park,
    Chicago.
  • Born to Albert Vinian Hanssen.
  • Father was a Chicago PD Officer and Mother was a
    Housewife.
  • Graduated High school Attended Northwestern
    University.
  • Later attended Medical school in pursuit of a
    Dental Degree.

  • Later decided to gain his MBA in Accounting in
    which he became a CPA.
  • Upon graduation he became a Police Officer in
    Chicago following his fathers footsteps.

Robert Hanssen Career
  • In 1976, decided to take a leave of absence from
    the CPD and entered the FBI.
  • Upon completion of basic training he was
    stationed in Washington Field office as an
    Investigator for White Collar crimes.
  • In 1979, was transferred to NYC field office
    where he commenced his career in the Intelligence
    Division of the FBI.

  • In 1979, Robert Hanssen began his Espionage
    Career by selling classified information to
    Soviet Agents for the sum of 20,000.
  • During this time he was discovered by his wife as
    he counted his payoff in their home basement.
  • Upon this discovery, his wife pleaded with him to
    cease any further activity.

  • In 1981, Hanssen was transferred back to
    Washington, D.C. where he was assigned to the
    Intelligence Division as ASAC (Assistant Special
    Agent In Charge).
  • On October 15, 1985 his Soviet handlers
    received documents from Hanssen detailing secret
    information (1st Offense).
  • Such acts led to continuation of selling of
    information which eventually led to his downfall.

Investigation Process
  • In 1997, another FBI Agent by the name of Earl
    Edwin Pitts was arrested by the FBI after a
    Russian Defector tipped off Agents.
  • Pitts conceded to a plea bargain in which he
    would only be sentenced to 23 years, opposed to
    life in jail, in return for his cooperation with
    agents.
  • Pitts was the first to mention Hanssen as a
    possible Spy but due to his current situation
    was ignored and no further investigations were
    made on Hanssen.

FBI Monitoring of Hanssen
  • Unbeknownst to Hanssen, he was being monitored by
    the FBI due to a security breech (Laptop
    Missing).
  • On January 13, 2001,Hanssen was transferred back
    to FBI headquarters for close monitoring.
  • During this monitoring the FBI continued to
    gather information on Hanssen and his activities
    through execution of search warrants.

The Downfall of Hanssen
  • On February 18, 2001 Hanssen was arrested for
    Espionage against the United States.
  • He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

    with Classified Sensitive information.
  • Easily breeched computer systems.
  • FBI Structural Secrecy Main Downfall.
  • In house Internal Affairs Unit which enabled
    proper and efficient Employee investigations.

  • Special Agent Louis Freech resigned from his
    position.
  • Internal Polygraph became a practice for all FBI
    employees.
  • Intensive day to day investigations on possible
    wrongdoings.
