Title: SINGAPORES BIOMED GRID BMG

1
SINGAPORES BIOMED GRID (BMG) PRESENTATION TO
PRAGMA 11-12 MARCH SAN DIEGO Larry Ang
BioInformatics Institute Larry_at_bii-sg.org
2
  • NATIONAL PERSPECTIVES
  • BIOMEDICAL INDUSTRY A MATTER OF SURVIVAL
  • OVER-DEPENDENCE ON MANUFACTURING
  • ABUNDANCE OF IT EXPERTISE
  • STRICT ENFORCEMENT OF IPR
  • ENGLISH LANGUAGE A GREAT ASSET TO SINGAPORE
  • ? CANNOT FAIL

3
  • GOALS
  • CREATE A BIOMED R D HUB

4
  • Need to strongly support PRAGMA
  • Build strong community
  • Create linkages
  • Increase efficiency through international
    collaboration
  • Forge economy of scale e.g. aggregation data
    traffic between Asia and USA.

5
  • BIIS MISSION
  • National research and training Institute within a
    collaborative, multi-disciplinary, inclusive
    framework.
  • To develop expertise with broad and deep
knowledge of biology and information technology,
to advance biomedical RD in Singapore.

6
  • RESEARCH FOCUS
  • Computational Biology Genomics
  • Systems Biology
  • Genetics
  • Medical Imaging
  • Theoretical Mathematical Biology
  • Grid Computing

7
  • POSTGRADUATE TEACHING
  • MSc in Bioinformatics (with NUS) starts Jul 02
  • First batch - 30 scholarship students,
  • GRID COMPUTING TRAINING PROGRAM
  • First batch of 60 graduates to be trained for one
year SDSC sending 4 trainers for a one week .
  • Second batch of 60 - 2003

8
  • KEY CHALLENGE
  • integrate genomic and clinical data to advance
    biomedical RD
  • BOTTOM LINE
  • We want to advance biomedicine NOT computing per
    se!

9
  • Demands in High Performance Computing-
  • Tera-scale CPU requirements
  • Peta-scale data storage management
  • Tera-scale data networking
  • Security
  • Bioinformatics Expertise!

10
  • National Tissue Repository
  • reliable databases and strong data
    confidentiality.
  • National Disease Registary
  • Set up by MOH in collaboration with healthcare
    institutions and research institutes in
    Singapore.
  • Database on cardiac, diabetes, myopia, cancer,
renal etc. disease for healthcare planning and a
platform for epidemiological studies of prevalent
    diseases in this region,
  • When fully operational, will integrate all
    registries creating new opportunities for
    scientific and clinical RD.
