Remit-Aims and Objectives
  • NPSA SPN14.
  • To assist hospitals to develop and implement a
    competency framework for all staff involved in
    the transfusion process.
  • This remit to be completed in 12 months.
  • Next and final meeting 15th March 2008

Safer Practice Notice 14
  • SPN 14-Issued 9/11/06
  • Synopsis
  • By May 07 hospitals should implement an action
    plan for competency based training and assessing
    for all staff involved in the transfusion process
  • May 2008- 50 of staff formally assessed
  • May 2009- 100 staff formally assessed
  • Nov 2009- all initial competencies should have
    been undertaken.

Tasks
  • Provide tools to develop, plan and implement
    SPN14 including competency frameworks.
  • Promote sharing of good practice
  • Advise the NPSA on how to address feedback
    feedback on the implementation of SPN14

  • Development of a plan
  • Most hospitals have begun to develop a plan for
    implementation
  • 75 of hospitals had begun implementation
  • Variety of methods are being used for training
    and assessing

  • Letter reinforcing the need for senior Trust
    involvement in implementation of SPN 14 NPSA.
  • Competency requirements are not
  • the sole responsibility of the TP.
