Title: BfiNBarnafdande i Norden

1
BfiN-Barnafödande i Norden
  • Childbearing in the Nordic Countries the
qualitative research network in Caring Sciences
  • The network was initiated in 2002 by Terese
Bondas, Finland and Anita Hallgren, Sweden
  • Initial planning support from NorFa and now
supported by a Nordforsk grant 2006-2009,
  • 40 members

2
The aims
  • Coordinate the qualitative research in
childbearing and strive towards excellence in the
Nordic Countries, and through collaboration bring
creative Nordic research programmes and findings
    to the international forefront.
  • Contribute to disciplinary development, and an
    impact on an innovative collaborative
evidence-based and life world based care.
  • Our intention is also to promote the use of
    qualitative childbearing research in the
development of the health care policies in the
    Nordic countries.

3
DOING AND PROMOTING QUALITATIVE RESEARCH IN
CHILDBEARING
  • Increase researcher mobility and collaboration
and coordinate research teams in qualitative
    childbearing research
  • Identify and gather resources to make qualitative
    research programs possible
  • Initiate and develop research education and
supervision in qualitative research and attract
    new doctoral students
  • Increase the publishing of research findings in
both scientific and popular press to scientists,
new parents and caregivers, and politicians, and
    to others who are interested.

4
The qualitative research area of childbearing
  • The qualitative research projects have often been
developed without the support of research groups.
  • There is a need for explorative, comparative,
culturally sensitive as well as synthesized
    qualitative research to develop care.
  • Changes in the life world characterize pregnancy,
birth and the early parenthood as family events
that often involve the grandparents, other close
relatives and friends of the family.
Relationships change and there are new
relationships actualized through the family needs
    of care.
  • Life world is the reality that is experienced by
each person in her or his own way, however,
closely related to the culture of the society.
  • The increasing trend of applying risk
perspectives to life world phenomena challenges
the researchers in the network to ask ethical and
critical questions in a humanistic collaborative
research and pursue a collaborative critical
doctoral education in the Nordic Countries.

5
Research interests of the network
  • Womens and mens reproductive health and
suffering in a life cycle perspective
  • Promoting parenthood
  • Pregnancy, birth and postpartum care and
    identification of caring needs
  • Care of the newborn and small child
  • Breastfeeding and care
  • Health information and care
  • The development of ideas in childbearing
    professions
  • -Variations exist in conceptual and theoretical
development in relation to the development in the
Nordic countries as well as previous claims of
    disciplines such as medicine, psychology,
anthropology and public health. The network
invites multi disciplinary and multi professional
    collaboration.
