2- NHS Walk-in Centres
- Background
- 66 nurse-led NHS Walk-in Centres have now been
established with central funding from the
Department of Health the first NHS Walk-in
Centre opened in January 2000 - A further 16 NHS Walk-in Centres are being
developed which will bring the total number of
centrally funded NHS Walk-in Centres in England
to 82 - Alongside this 7 NHS Walk-in Centres focusing
particularly on commuters are being developed
through independent procurement
3- NHS Walk-in Centres
- Access and Activity
- Open 365 days a year most NHS Walk-in Centres are
open seven days a week from early in the morning
until late at night a small number of centres
are open 24 hours a day - Offering a service to over 11 million people the
centres are situated in convenient locations that
allow the population quick and easy access to a
range of NHS services - The centres are helping to improve access for
specific groups with particular needs including
young people, homeless people, students, refugees
and asylum seekers

- Access and Activity
- Since opening in 2000 the centres have seen over
6.5 million people on average the centres see
around 114 patients a day i.e. 42,000 patients a
year depending on their location some centres
see as many as 200 patients a day -
- The centres help to improve service delivery and
provide a local contribution towards achievement
of the 24/48-hour primary care access target and
the 4-hour wait AE target -

- Treatment and advice for minor ailments
- Treatment and advice for minor injuries
- Nurse prescribing from a limited formulary
- Supply of medicines under Patient Group
Directions (PGDs) - Additional services
- Health promotion e.g. smoking cessation

- Sexual health/lifestyle advice
- Counselling
- Pharmacy advice
- Emergency dental advice

- Service Models The Early Days
- Pilot NHS Walk-in Centres were based on four
service models - Shop front location - standalone
- Primary Care location
- AE location
- Out of Hours location
- Acceptance of the new NHS Walk-in Centre
nurse-led service was slow - Engagement and support from primary and secondary
care professionals proved difficult during early
stages of pilot - this was a key lesson learnt
7- NHS Walk-in Centres
- Service Integration is happening now!
- In the majority of cases NHS Walk-in Centre
nurse-led services are now seen as an integral
part of local healthcare delivery - Engagement and support from other healthcare
professionals is improving - NHS Walk-in Centre nurse-led services are now
being fully integrated into Primary Care, AE and
Out of Hours service settings - NHS Walk-in Centres are working in partnership
with paramedics and community services in a
number of settings -

- Satellite and mobile NHS Walk-in Centre services
are being established - Diagnostic services are available in a number of
centres - Physiotherapy services are being provided by a
number of centres -
- There are an increased number of nurses with
extended skills working in NHS Walk-in Centres -
