Title: Fibromyalgia

1
Fibromyalgia
  • Fibromyalgia is a disorder in which individuals
    experience fatigue and widespread pain.
  • The term Fibromyalgia can be broken down (fibro)
fibrous tissue, (myo) muscle, (algia) pain.

2
Causes
  • Currently doctors do not know what causes
Fibromyalgia. The latest thinking points to
patients having a lower threshold for pain.
  • Researchers believe that the brains pain
receptors may overreact to pain signals.
  • Therefore, something that would not normally hurt
becomes very painful to someone with
    Fibromyalgia.

3
Risk Factors
  • sleep disturbances
  • injury, especially to the spinal cord
  • viral or bacterial infection
  • abnormalities in the autonomic nervous system
  • changes in muscle metabolism

4
Incidence and Prevalence
  • 3 to 6 million people are estimated to suffer
    from Fibromyalgia.
  • Women are 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed
    with Fibromyalgia.
  • It is more prevalent in women with family members
    diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.
  • It is seen in men and children usually earlier in
    life.

5
Pathology
  • Fibromyalgia is thought of as an
    arthritis-related condition, even though it
really is not a type of arthritis.
  • However, as arthritis it is thought of as a
    rheumatic condition.

6
Symptoms and Diagnosis
  • Often symptoms include
  • widespread pain
  • fatigue and sleep disturbance
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • headaches and facial pain
  • heightened sensitivity

7
Symptoms and Diagnosis
  • It is problematic to diagnose Fibromyalgia,
especially because there is not a laboratory test
    for it.
  • The American College of Rheumatology has
developed a set of guidelines for Fibromyalgia.
  • One must experience widespread pain in a minimum
of 11 of 18 tender points for at least 3 months.

8
Treatments of Fibromyalgia center on medications
and self-care
  • Medications include
  • analgesics (acetaminophen, ibuprofen)
  • antidepressants
  • muscle relaxants
  • Pregabalin anti-seizure medication used to
    treat pain.
  • cognitive behavior therapy

9
Prevention
  • Prevention is very important in the management
of Fibromyalgia. Key factors in prevention
    include
  • reducing stress, getting enough sleep, exercising
regularly, pacing yourself and maintaining a
    healthy lifestyle.
  • It is important to remain active but, not over
doing it. Have a regular sleeping schedule.
    Regular exercise can reduce symptoms.
  • Keep activities at an even pace. Have good eating
    habits and avoid caffeine.
