The role of the Education, Training and Standards
Committee

History
  • The Court of Electors was the primary College
    education committee until June, 2006 and was
    chaired alternately by the President and the Dean
  • The Court of Electors had equal standing in the
    Bye-laws with Council
  • This meant that Council was not formally aware of
    proceedings at the Court of Electors

Current situation
  • Since July, 2006 the Education, Training and
    Standards Committee has reported to the Central
    Executive Committee (which replaced Council and
    the Executive Finance Committee)
  • The Education, Training and Standards Committee
    is chaired by the Dean as chief educational
    officer

The Education, Training and Standards Committee
  • The Committee meets six times each year in
    February, April, June, August, October and
    December
  • In addition to the President, Dean and Registrar
    all the educational officers sit on the committee
    in addition to representatives of the Divisions
    and Faculties
  • Various sub-committees report to the Committee

Role of the Education Training and Standards
Committee
  • Approving educational policy and training in
    relation to psychiatry, monitoring the standards
    for assessments and for the examination for
    admission to Membership, approving the
    curriculum, approving the programme for
    continuing professional development, electing to
    Fellowship and Membership of the College and
    registering Pre-Membership Psychiatric Trainees,
    Affiliates, New Associates and International
    Associates in accordance with the provisions of
    the Bye-Laws and the Regulations. The
    administration of termination, suspension and
    disciplinary procedures. Workforce and
    equivalence issues.

Examinations Committee
  • Chaired by The Chief Examiner (Professor
    Anthony Bateman)
  • Develop all aspects of the assessment process for
    examinations form a coherent assessment schedule
    that maps onto the relevant curricula review the
    results for the MRCPsych Examinations approve
    the question papers

Assessment Committee
  • Chaired by An Associate Dean (Professor Greg
    OBrien)
  • Develop all aspects of the assessment process for
    psychiatric training (ST1 ST6) (except
    examinations) including workplace based
    assessments form a coherent assessment schedule
    that maps onto the relevant curricula play the
    leading role in developing trainee portfolios to
    accompany the assessment schedule for membership

Examinations and Assessment Committees
  • We plan to bring these two committees together
    over the next few years to demonstrate the
    importance of the total package of assessments of
    which the examination is one

Continuing Professional Development Committee
  • Chaired by The Director of CPD
  • (Dr Joe Bouch)
  • Formulate policy regarding CPD, co-ordinate,
    facilitate and develop the CPD activities which
    are provided by the College, and to assist
    members to take advantage of these and many other
    opportunities that are occurring locally. Assist
    with certification, the formation and
    establishment of peer groups and any other CPD
    matter which cannot be dealt with locally.

Equivalence Committee
  • Chaired by An Associate Dean
  • (Dr Kandiah Sivakumar)
  • Deliver the Colleges work in respect of both
    applications under Article 14 and questions
    that arise with regard to the equivalence of
    qualifications gained outside the UK and Ireland

Fellowship Committee
  • Chaired by The Registrar
  • Consider nominations for the Fellowship and
    Honorary Fellowship and to make recommendations
    to the Education Training and Standards Committee
    for election and registration

Overseas Doctors Training Committee
  • Chaired by Dr Nick Rose
  • All aspects of training of overseas doctors and
    the College's regulations for the Consultant
    Assisted Sponsorship Scheme (CASS). In addition
    the it is responsible for assessing applications
    and issuing Statements of Eligibility for Higher
    Training in the UK.

Workforce Committee
  • Chaired by An Associate Dean
  • (Dr Sally Pidd)
  • Review and report on the workforce in psychiatry,
    including numbers with regard to career grades
    and senior medical appointments

Quality Assurance Committee
  • Chaired by An Associate Dean (Dr Nick Brown)
  • Work with Postgraduate Deans and the Postgraduate
    Medical Education and Training Board to deliver
    quality assurance and quality control in medical
    education in psychiatry. Provide, where
    necessary, standards and advice on how these may
    be assessed comment on PMETB reports and provide
    advice to postgraduate deans on issues that may
    arise from deanery quality control systems. This
    may include visits and remedial plans where
    problems occur. The Medical Education Conference.

Curriculum Committee
  • Chaired by An Associate Dean (Dr Nick Brown)
  • Review and refine curricula in line with College
    educational policy provide advice on other
    medical or collegiate curricula, e.g. foundation
    programme curriculum, general practice training
    curriculum, as required

Meetings with Postgraduate Deans
  • Chaired by The President and Lead
    Postgraduate Dean for Psychiatry
  • Bring together those with responsibility for
    delivering training to ensure a continuous
    dialogue over developments in medical education
    as well as developments in postgraduate education
    in psychiatry specifically and their
    implementation

Faculty Education and Curriculum Committees
  • Chaired by Nominated by Faculty Executive
  • Provide specialist input to all aspects of
    postgraduate medical education in psychiatry at
    core and advanced levels including the
    development of curriculum, relevant assessment
    schedules and contribution to quality assurance
    / quality control
