Physical Activity Referral Schemes (PARS)
  • PARS are specialist time limited programmes that
provide a means of introducing sedentary people
    into physical activity
  • GPs and other Health Professionals play a very
important role in identifying large amounts of
the population who may benefit from becoming more
active, however due to time restrictions and a
lack of knowledge in primary care PARS can help
to increase physical activity levels in patients
with the aim of improving, maintaining or even
    eliminating certain medical conditions

3
  • The aim is to improve habitual physical activity
levels and encourage healthier and more positive
    lifestyles
  • Initial consultation with the patient will
determine the most appropriate physical activity
  • Not just about getting people in to a gym
  • People are given information on Health Walks,
exercise classes, home based exercise programmes
in an attempt to increase physical activity
    levels.

Developments
  • In the future we are looking to implement a
children and younger peoples referral pathway to
encourage more young people to become more
active. The activities would be tailored
    specifically for the age range.
  • Sheffield is believed to be a national leader in
terms of physical activity referral schemes and
hope to continue to develop our policies and
procedures to further improve the standards for
    patients.
