Title: CURRICULUM MATTERS
1(No Transcript)
2Fait Accompli the integration of CDIS with the
University of Missouri
- Susanne Darcy and Terrie Nagel
- AACIS, October 24, 2003
3Past Perceptions/Procedures
- Isolated/separate
- Small e on semester schedule of courses
- Carried no resident credit
(video courses the
exception) - Classroom experience considered by many faculty
to be the better option - No W course designations reported to Registrar
on any campus
4Past Perceptions/Procedures
- Courses not automatically considered part of
semester load - No financial aid disbursed until course grade
received by registrars office - Several courses entirely computer-evaluated, or
minimal faculty involvement - Subject to annual departmental approval,
as is still the case
5Previous Record-keeping Procedures
- CDIS database
- CDIS course grades reported to the MU Registrar
electronically (except video courses) - Different method of requesting transcripts how
they were handled (each campus)
6Differences in Perception between Print and Video
- Videoresident credit, contact hours (New York
seminars) - Independent studyExtension (e) credit, judged
unfairly as inferior - Ironically, some earlier video courses were less
comprehensive (i.e., less rigorous) than IS
courses
7Underlying Reasons for Integration
- Campus
- Increased enrollments
- Increased revenue to the University
- All CDIS students now admitted students
- Non-degree status for non-MU students
8Underlying Reasons for Integration
- CDIS
- Many other DE programs blurring of the
boundaries between classroom DE courses - Requirements for classroom seat time
diminishing - More frequent demands from students for
electronic resources (library computer) - Financial aid issues
9Process Involved in Integration
- Multiple meetings over time with several ad hoc
groups comprised of CDIS and campus offices such
as admissions, registrar, financial aid, AS,
residential life - How to deal with these non-degree-seeking
students - Subject to same academic
regulations what makes sense?
10Process Involved in Integration
- Numerous procedural issues
- Transcripts
- Missing grades
- Semester classifications
- Financial aid
- Admissions
- Graduate students
11Process Involved in Integration
- Numerous procedural issues
- Applications
- FERPA rights
- Holds/Dismissal status
- Employee training (CICS Student Information
System - Drop vs. Withdrawal
- Notify students/faculty
12Result of ad hoc committee work
- Academic Procedures form sent to undergraduate
deans, faculty council for approval March, 2003 - Revision of residency requirement. In March,
2003 Faculty Council voted to replace the former
residency requirement with the following
graduation requirement Candidates seeking
undergraduate degrees from the University of
Missouri-Columbia must successfully complete at
least 30, of their final 36, hours in coursework
offered by MU. Approved exceptions to the
policy will be allowed, as in the case of the RN
to BSN program.
13Current procedures
- Students sign or accept academic procedures
before enrolling - Students notified concerning electronic resources
and student numbers after enrolling/admission - Biweekly enrollment reports
- Courses carry resident credit same appearance
- Non-UM graduate students must send official
transcript with proof of baccalaureate degree
before coursework can be accepted
14Current procedures
- Grade transfer process more complicated (will
include grade reports signed by instructor and
chair eventually) - Drops/withdrawals reported
- Course repeat policy applies to CDIS courses
effective SS2003
15Outcomes
- For students
- Financial aid for degree-seeking students
- Electronic resource access
- Dismissed students
- More stringent classifications/reporting
- Student IDs, other services
16Outcomes
- For CDIS
- More interaction with campus
- Standardized procedures/terminology
- Affect on enrollments?
- Academic renewal
- For Faculty
- More representative instructor load
17Potential Implications/Future Trends
- Students better served (financial aid, resident
credit, physical presence not required) - More faculty/departmental involvement
- Improved relationships with UM student advisors
- Academic units more willing to allow students in
CDIS courses
18Potential Implications/Future Trends
- CDIS staff more oversight if allowed to enter
grades directly into Registrars database - Registrar personnel enter grades by hand, no new
programming while their old system is being
upgraded we continue to recommend an electronic
grade transfer once the new system is implemented - BGS completion degree program
