Overview
  • Many of the labs on campus use glass chemical
    bottles.
  • Improperly disposed of these bottles can break
    and become sharps and could potentially injure
    employees.

Overview
  • In this program, you will learn how, through
    proper safety techniques, to properly handle the
    hazard, resulting in a safer environment for our
    staff and the members of the University community.

Lab Users Responsibilities/Procedures
  • Glass - including All Broken Glass
  • If Contaminated with radioactive material
  • STOP and contact Health Physics at 492-6523
  • If Contaminated with biologically infectious
    material (see details in section VII)
  • Place glass in autoclave bag and render
    noninfectious by autoclaving or chemical
    disinfection.
  • Place autoclave bag in special containers marked
    "Certified Non-Biohazardous Materials" which have
    been placed in autoclave areas
  • E.H. S. will pickup these containers and
    properly dispose of their contents in a special
    container at the E.H S. facility.
  • These containers cannot go into the regular trash
    dumpsters.

  • Glass - If Contaminated with acutely hazardous
    material (EPA "P Listed" Waste)
  • Remove cap
  • Remove label or obliterate and mark "Empty" or
    "MT"
  • Triple-rinse empty bottles with the appropriate
    solvent - the rinse accumulated must be collected
    and marked as hazardous waste.
  • Place glass directly in a dumpster or in a
    contained boxed glass receptacle - Do Not
    Place Glass In Trash Cans
  • Tape close BOXED glass and mark as Trash and
    place in trash dumpster at loading dock or next
    to trash can in laboratories do not place in
    hallways.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure that you are wearing your safety glasses
  • Remove taped Boxed glass containers marked as
    trash from labs once a week on one of the
    scheduled service dates.
  • Gently place boxed glass directly into trash
    dumpster at loading dock.
  • Do Not open taped boxes
  • Do Not Throw boxes into dumpsters

Responsibilities
  • Loose glass bottles or broken glass in trash
    cans?
  • Contact your supervisor immediately
  • Do NOT empty trash can
  • Supervisor will contact E.H. S. to report
    infraction.
  • Supervisor will contact building proctor to
    report why trash cans were not emptied.
