Standardized Test Taking Tips
  • Before the test
  • Get a Good Nights Sleep
  • Eat Breakfast
  • Start your day as you usually do
  • Think positive
  • Visualize yourself doing well!

2
During the test
  • Read carefully - Be sure you understand the
    question being asked.
  • Read the question and all answer choices before
    marking anything.
  • Look for key words that give clues to what the
    test-maker wants you to do
  • Pay close attention to wording. Some words like
NO, NOT, NEVER, and ALWAYS, called Qualifiers,
can change the whole meaning of the question.

3
During the Test
  • Dont change answers unless you are absolutely
certain the first choice is usually right.
  • Answer the easiest questions first, and then go
    back to those you skipped.
  • Pace yourself Dont spend too much time on any
one question. Do your best and then move on.
  • Eliminate wrong answers.
  • If your asked for 2 examples from the passage,
    give 2 examplesnothing less!
  • If the test requires you to read passages and
then answer questions about what you read, Read
the questions first, so you know what to look
    for.

Math Strategies
  • When using scratch paper on a math test, double
check to make sure that you have copied the
problem correctly from the test booklet!
  • Line up place value correctly on your scratch
paper (thousands, hundreds, tens, ones) or the
    answer will be incorrect.
  • If your answer does not match one of the choices,
reread the problem, recopy the numbers, and try
    solving it again.
  • Show all your work (especially when partial
credit is awarded) and write as legibly as
    possible.
  • Even if you know the final answer is wrong,
don't erase your entire work because you may get
partial credit for using the correct procedure.

5
Finally
  • Fill in the ovals fully, write neatly, and erase
    stray marks.
  • Write constructed responses completely and
legibly A complete answer will get full credit.
  • Double-check the test number in your test booklet
against the answer sheet every few questions to
be sure you havent gotten on the wrong number.
  • Remember it's okay to not know everything
unlike class tests, these tests will have some
questions designed to challenge the limits of
your knowledge at a grade level above your
    current grade.
