Title: What is Engineering
1What is Engineering?
2Careers
- Engineering
- Engineers are the designers and builders of our
society. - Create and oversee the construction of all types
of vehicles, highways, buildings, factories and
mines. - Design and develop artificial organs, metal
alloys, ceramics, and devices. - Technicians
- Generally solve problems and manage technical
projects.
3Types of Engineering
- Aeronautical
- Aerospace
- Agricultural
- Automotive
- Biomedical
- Ceramic
- Chemical
- Civil
- Electrical
- Genetic
- Industrial
- Manufacturing
- Mechanical
- Metallurgical
- Mining
- Nuclear
- Petroleum
- And many more
Refer to handout for specifics on each type of
engineering.
4Educational Requirements
- Both four-year and five-year curricula of a
College of Engineering Bachelor of Science
program are founded on a common core of
coursework required by all students. - Coursework is designed to give each student a
thorough foundation of knowledge on which
specialization studies and a professional career
can be based.
5Coursework
The prospective engineering major must take a
minimum of 35 credit hours of engineering core
(foundation coursework drawn from the major
disciplines). Coursework is designed to equip the
student with a sound technical foundation for
later, more advanced specialized coursework, and
the eventual formation of professional
judgement. This coursework includes introductory
studies in such areas as engineering analysis and
computation, statistics, electrical engineering
principles, thermodynamics, statistics, dynamics,
fluids, and properties of materials.
6Requirements
- All students are required to take 45 semester
hours to satisfy the complete liberal arts
requirements. - Thirty six (36) semester hours will satisfy the
general education course requirements - Nine (9) semester hours will satisfy the exit
requirements
7General Education Requirement
- English Composition (6 sem. hrs.)
- Quantitative Methods (6 sem. hrs.)
- Natural Sciences (6 sem. hrs.)
- Social Sciences (6 sem. hrs.)
- Historical Perspectives (6 sem. hrs.)
- Fine Arts (3 sem. hrs.)
- African, Latin American, Middle Eastern or Asian
Perspectives (3 sem. hrs.)
8- Non-technical courses
- Social Sciences, Humanities, Communications
- (34 Semester Hours)
- Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics
- (Minimum 35 Semester Hours)
- Basic Engineering Science
- (Minimum 36 Semester Hours)
- Department Specialization
- (31 Semester Hours)
- Total 136 Semester Hours

10Organizations and Societies
- Societies
- An organized group of people joined together via
a common interest. - Most will supply a career pamphlet.
- Some will assist in the search for employment.
- Hold periodic meetings.
- Members deliver mini seminars.
- Employers attend with the goal of recruiting
personnel. - Members participate in resource sharing.
