Title: Adaptation to Climate Change GTZ Initiatives in India

1
Carbon Footprint Apparel Industry Presented
by Ms. Pamposh Bhat, Director Climate Change
Mitigation GTZ CDM India
2
Carbon Foot Printwhat does it mean?
  • The carbon footprint is a measure of the
exclusive global amount of carbon dioxide (CO2 in
Kgs or tonnes) and other greenhouse gases emitted
by a human activity or accumulated over the full
life cycle of a product or service.

3
Preliminary brainstorming for GHG Intensive
Activities
4
The Carbon Footprint can be Efficiently and
Effectively Reduced by Applying the following
steps
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) to accurately
    determine the current carbon footprint
  • Identification of hot-spots in terms of energy
    consumption and associated CO2-emissions
  • Usage of Renewable energy sources
  • Optimisation of energy efficiency and, thus,
reduction of CO2-emissions and reduction of other
    GHG emissions contributed from production
    processes
  • Identification of solutions to neutralise the CO2
emissions that cannot be eliminated by energy
saving measures. This last step includes carbon
offsetting investment in projects that aim at
the reducing CO2 emissions, for instance tree
    planting.

Underlining Facts about the Indian Textile
Industry
  • One of the largest and oldest sectors in the
    country.
  • Employs nearly 35 million persons (After
agriculture is the second-highest employer in the
    country)
  • Contribution 4 of GDP 14 of Industrial
    production
  • 9excise collection 16of countrys total
    export earnings
  • Highly fragmented sector and comprises
    small-scale, non-integrated spinning, weaving ,
    finishing and apparel- making enterprises.
  • The textile industry is among the SME intensive
sectors in India. Based on UNIDO study conducted
on SME Clusters in India, some noteworthy
clusters include Ludhiana (95 of countrys
woolen knitwear produced), Panipat (75 of
countrys total blanket produced), Tirupur ( 80
    of countrys hosiery exports).

GHG Mitigation Options for Textile Industry
  • Yarn Formation Stage
  • Installation of Variable frequency drive
    equipments
  • Installation of automated capacitor banks to
maintain the power factor close to infinity.
  • Fabric Formation Stage
  • Steam trapping leading to effective condensate
    removal thus energy efficiency.
  • online monitoring of boiler efficiency
  • Flash steam recovery and usage for low- pressure
application or use for feed water for heating.
  • Use of solar energy for water heating instead of
    fossil fuel used in boilers.
  • Wet Processing Stage
  • Use of solar energy for water heating instead of
    fossil fuel used in boilers.

Clothing is Responsible for Approximately one ton
of each Individuals CO2 Emissions (including
washing and drying)
  • WHATS IN IT FOR YOU- THE APPAREL INDUSTRY?
  • Brand differentiation
  • Opening of new markets
  • Safeguard client relationships
  • Secure brand value and reputation
  • Achieve competitive advantage over competition
  • Fulfil major Corporate Social Responsibility
    objectives
  • Capture market share from those who fail to take
    action
  • Demonstrate environmental responsibility to
    customers and shareholders

9
..Carbon will be the currency of coming age..
  • HOW YOU CAN PROFIT ?
  • You are experiencing the birth of a new
industry based on low-carbon products and
services. You may plan to become part of it, help
shape the future and profit, or you can plan to
do nothing, as the world around your business
    changes rapidly.
  • IF YOU DO NOTHING?
  • There is only advantage for first movers or
industry leaders, once equilibrium is reached,
there will be no more advantage to be gained, but
only disadvantage for those who failed to move,
or who were last to be seen doing so.

10
Points to be noted
  • Conventionally farmed cotton has a greater
footprint than organic cotton because of its
    dependence on petroleum based chemical
    fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Larger sizes or heavier weight clothes will have
a correspondingly greater footprint. The more raw
materials needed to make a product, the higher
    its carbon footprint.
  • Cotton garments produced in countries using
highly mechanised supply chains will have a much
greater footprint than those using more manual
    labour-based production methods.
  • Basically, countries that mainly use agricultural
machines for farming that run on fossil fuels,
will have a much higher carbon footprint than
those that are more labour intensive.

11
  • How to reduce carbon footprint?
  • Low impact farming
  • Environment friendly production methods
  • Renewable energy
  • Low water footprint
  • Waste water treatment
  • Transportation
  • Bio degradable packing
  • Wash Cool / Line Dry

12
EarthPositive Apparel The leading case study
  • Carbon Trusts (an UK Govt. Establishment) first
carbon reduction label for textile products
  • Earth Positive is a unique product, a unique
concept and has sell-through into every
    conceivable industry sector.
  • A green revolution in the promotional Carbon
    neutral apparel
  • The purpose of EarthPositive apparel is to pass
    forward competitive advantage to companies
looking for ways to act on climate change using
    real products.
  • The development project for EarthPositive
apparel, that has taken two years to complete,
will provide the apparel industry with a
blueprint in ethical and sustainable production.

13
  • The only course of action to change
    business-as-usual practices and genuinely reduce
any emissions that contribute to global warming
is the reduction of on-site energy consumption,
and a switch from fossil fuel to renewable
    energy.

14
  • Changing consumer attitudes to climate change,
    present forward-thinking companies with an
opportunity to develop and market low-carbon
products and it may act to promote or safeguard
the reputation and brand value of a firm thereby
supporting both the book and market value of the
company Hence time is ripe for the Indian
apparel/ textile industry to choose the path of
    being Carbon Neutral
