Title: Preparing Teachers to Create Pathways From High School to College

1
Preparing Teachers to Create Pathways From High
School to College
  • Barbara Taylor, Western New Mexico University
  • Bryan Baca, Magdalena High School

2
WNMU Prepares Teachers
  • 2 2 Program for prospective teachers with an
associates degree in a technical field e.g.
    automotive, construction, welding, computer
    networking, business
  • Complete general education requirements and
    professional education requirements

3
Integrated Teacher Preparation
  • CTE teacher candidates are integrated with
secondary teacher candidates from the beginning
    of their professional education courses
  • CTE teacher candidates also take a course that
enables them to integrate reading, writing and
    math into their technical field.

4
CTE Teacher Preparation Contd
  • Most difficult part of the program because some
of the candidates struggle with basic skills
  • Today secondary textbooks in the technical areas
have been developed to assist teachers with the
reading, writing and required math for their
    areas

5
CTE Teacher Preparation Contd
  • Individuals in remote locations can access
courses online through NeTL (Network for Teacher
    Licensure)
  • Field experience provided through local secondary
schools with career and technical education
    programs

6
Economic Impact
  • Teachers prepared for teaching in technical areas
in secondary, postsecondary, industry and other
    venues
  • Teachers work collaboratively with business and
industry to provide students with individual
opportunity and access to higher education

7
Economic Impact Contd
  • Some programs nationally certified by industry
    e.g. NATEF (National Automotive Technicians
    Educational Foundation
  • Program covers all aspects of the industry as
    well as integrating academic subjectsmath,
    reading, writing

8
Economic Impact Contd
  • National certification increases opportunities
for studentsbetter jobs, higher pay, less
training needed on the job, reduced time in
    postsecondary ed
  • Students participating in nationally certified
programs receive college credit in high school
and can continue with postsecondary education

9
Case Study of One Teacher
  • Bryan Baca received an associates degree from
    WNMU in automotive technology
  • Began working as an automotive technician at
    Monette Ford in Socorro
  • Recruited by the school board members to develop
a nationally certified program for high school
    students

10
Case Study Contd
  • Set up program and began working on certification
with NATEF, School Board, local community, and
    PED Supervisor
  • Concurrently enrolled in teacher education
program at WNMU and took classes online
  • December 2007 degree recipient
  • December 2007 nationally certified program

11
Bryan Baca
  • Born and raised in Magdalena
  • A 1985 Graduate of Magdalena high school
  • A 1988 graduate of WNMU with an AAS degree in
    automotive technology
  • Worked in the automotive industry until 2000
  • Hired at the Magdalena school district in 2001 to
build and operate an automotive program

12
  • Acquiring licensure to become a highly qualified
    teacher in New Mexico
  • Began the automotive program including a Business
    Partners Program
  • Commitment from the school district and community

13
Automotive Program at Magdalena High School
  • National Automotive Technicians Educational
    Foundation (NATEF) www.natef.org
  • NATEF was founded in 1983 as an independent,
non-profit organization with a single mission To
    evaluate technician training programs against
standards developed by the automotive industry
    and recommend qualifying programs for
    certification (accreditation) by ASE, the
    National Institute for Automotive Service
    Excellence.

14
Automotive Program Contd
  • The NATEF process has resulted in certified
automotive training programs in all fifty states
at the secondary and post-secondary levels. NATEF
also evaluates the providers of in-service
technician training programs under a program
    called Continuing Automotive Service Education
    (CASE).

15
Automotive Program Contd
  • Articulation
  • The opportunity for high school students to earn
college credit and apply those credits to an
    automotive degree (AAS)
  • Magdalena has articulation agreements with New
Mexico Jr. College and Central New Mexico
    Community College

16
Automotive Program Contd
  • If a student chose to continue in an articulated
program, they would have half of the program
completed upon graduation from high school
  • If a student chose not to continue with
    post-secondary education, they would have
    entry-level experience in the automotive
technology field enabling them to be employed in
    the field.

17
Automotive Program Contd
  • Career Paths
  • Students need a fair chance to succeed in the
career path of their choice. Not all students
want to go into a four year college program.
  • Certified and articulated CTE programs assist
students in career pathways between high school
    and college

18
Whats Next
  • Future expansion of the Magdalena automotive
    program with more articulation agreements
  • Expansion of the WNMU Career and Technical
Teacher Education program to more students in
    more remote locations
  • Improving the educonomy of local New Mexico
communities by increasing access and success
