Title: A FACT OF MATTER
1A FACT OF MATTER
Presented by M. Stewart
2Questions to Ponder What are the three states of
matter? When does a chemical change occur? What
are the indictors of a chemical change in
matter? What happens to substances during a
chemical change? Why is sharpening a pencil a
physical change and not a chemical change?
Vocabulary
Objective Explore, observe, discuss, and record
chemical changes using everyday household
substances.
- Solution
- Mixtures
- Chemical reaction
- Indicators
3Matter appears in three states. Physical and
chemical properties are characteristics used to
describe, identify, and classify matter. Physical
change occurs in the state, size, and shape of
matter. Chemical change occurs when there is a
breakdown in the composition of the matter and a
new matter is formed. There are certain
indicators that will appear to show which
properties of matter is being manipulated.
4The Task
- You are to work as a group rotating from station
to station completing the experiments located at
each station. - Each member of the group will be given a special
title and task to perform. - Each member of the group is responsible for their
share of the work. - You are to discuss your findings and indicate
them in writing using the scientific vocabulary
given.
5Whats Next
After you have completed the experiments go to
the teachers desk and get an extended activity
from the stack. Read and identify the indicators
of the products that show that a chemical change
occurred.
Heres the scenario Alien scientists from a
planet called Aloeco located in another galaxy
are busy working in their lab to prepare food
items to take with them on their journey to visit
the Milky Way.
6Results
Vinegar Milk curdling of the milk Baking
Soda Vinegar fizzing Vinegar Cabbage Juice
changes from purple to pink Milk Ammonium
Nitrate (fertilizer) solution gets cold as
granules dissolve Milk and Calcium Chloride
(road salt) solution gets hot as granules
dissolve
Indicator Production of a solid
Indicator Production of a gas
Indicator Change in color
Indicator Change of temperature (cold)
Indicator Change in temperature (hot)
7- Scenario Assessment
- The product absorbed heat by turning cold
- The product changed colors
- A gas was given off as the two reactants were
mixed together - Heat and light was given off
