Course Description
  • In this course we will introduce statistical
    techniques for inferring structure from text. The
    aim of the course is to introduce existing
    techniques in statistical NLP and to stimulate
    thought into bettering these. We will look in
    detail at the application of NLP in Information
    Retrieval, Information Extraction, Dialog based
    Transaction Systems and Statistical Machine
    Translation.
  • Homeworks and project form an important component.

Prerequisites
  • Programming skills (any favourite language will
    do).
  • Basic maturity in mathematics.
  • We will build on all key concepts in class.

  • Minor I II 30
  • Major 20
  • Homework 30
  • Project 20

Homeworks
  • Handing out first class of the week.
  • Submissions in one week.
  • Late Homeworks will not be graded.
  • Homework Policy must be done individually.
  • Help seek help only from the instructors.
  • Solutions will be posted two weeks from due
    date.
  • Programming assignments to give hands-on
    experience on each topic. Submit over email/give
    demo.

Class Discussions
  • Every week one person will lead a class
    discussion of about 20 mins duration on a
    predecided topic.
  • The discussion leaders job will be to
  • come prepared on the topic (usually a topic of
    popular interest)
  • give a brief introduction
  • be prepared to ask questions to stimulate a
    discussion.
  • be prepared to answer questions from the class on
    this topic.
  • Class participation will carry the weight of one
    homework.

Project
  • Projects will be decided in early March.
  • Projects can be picked in consultation with the
    instructor.
  • Projects have to be done individually.
  • Projects will require about four weeks of work.

What's expected from you
  • Stay up to date with readings.
  • Do your homeworks. Homeworks will be handed out
    every week. So the responsibility is on you to
    get them even if you are absent from class.
  • When your turn comes to lead a class discussion
    come well prepared.
  • Participate in class by asking questions.
  • Always have all your doubts cleared.
