    enjoyable, and social endeavor, Elderhostel
offers a warm atmosphere where the individual is
important and making new friends is easy. Typical

PLANNING THE PROGRAM
10
LEARNING STYLESMany
retirees have had extensive formal education and
all have had a lifetime of experiences. They are
quite different from college students. Hostelers
  • Appreciate a structured, organized environment
  • Want details about what will be taught and a
    brief biography of each instructor
  • Usually favor active versus passive activities,
but need a balance of both
  • Want direct, person-to-person contact with
faculty, dislike it when faculty read lectures
  • Want classes that offer time for discussion and Q
    A
  • Do not like surprises, such as changes in plans
  • Expect that faculty and staff will adhere to the
program descriptions published in the catalog
