Title: GIS output

1
GIS output
  • Components of GIS
  • data input -gt database management -gt analysis -gt
    output
  • Output can be considered in three ways
  • tabular results
  • softcopy -gt screen display
  • hardcopy -gt printed

2
Procedural Output Steps
a.  Determine purpose of map output and scaleb.
Which theme layers and/or attribute items -
foreground /background c. Design map elements
symbols and coloursd. Design map layout title,
scale etc..
symbol design rules Use of design variables
following cartographic conventions Qualitative
(categorical) versus quantitative (ordinal,
interval) data Choice of boundary line or area
fill for polygons Colour - avoid dark solids and
ensure sufficient contrast

4. Design Layout
  • The following are key components of map design
  • Title is required to define content
  • Scale required, usually as scale bar (ratio can
    be problematic),
  • Scale bar divisions by round logical numbers
  • Boxes can be used to hold keys, sections or maps
    together
  • Legend defines items not self-explanatory- must
    match exactly
  • North arrow is often redundant if North is 'up'
    (but may be added)
  • Latitude/longitude (or UTM) ticks (or location
    map)
  • Data source and map designer ( metadata)

Print formats
Common graphic output formats Postscript (PS)
Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) Hewlett Packard
Graphics Language (HPGL) Adobe Acrobat Portable
Document Format (PDF) Colour - screen to print
differences - RGB versus CMYK
13
Colour - RGB (monitor) versus CMYK (printer)
RGB additive colours
CMYK subtractive colours

Printing devices
Monochrome cheaper, can be photocopied is
colour necessary Colour is required for much
output, due to complexity. From the 1990s, ink
jet Printers are the most common, but solid
colours can be too intense. Resolution Measured
in dots per inch (dpi).    300 dpi was a standard
in the 90s 600 and 1200 are now common, useful
for images and sharper text. Size Sheets up to
11 x 17" Ink jet or Laser Printers (100)Roll
gt 11 x 17" Ink jet (36 or 54 " drum). (10,000)
