1The West Bank BarrierFebruary 2007
- In June 2002, Israel accelerated construction of
the Barrier. - It stated that the Barrier was a temporary
security structure to prevent the entrance of
suicide bombers into Israel. - In many places the Barrier separates
Palestinians from other Palestinians, from their
families, from their farm land, and from
humanitarian services such as water resources,
hospitals and schools. - The UN objection to the Barrier is to the route
in the West Bank and not to the Barrier itself.
210 of the Barrier is made up of 8-9 meter
concrete slabs. This type of Barrier is mostly
found in urban areas.

4- There are 60 gates in the Barrier that allow
some access to land, however, fewer than half are
open to Palestinians. - Palestinians must obtain permits from the Israeli
army to cross a gate. The permit is valid for one
gate only. - Gates are generally open 3 times a day for 20
minutes and can be unpredictable.

7- On 4 July 2004, the International Court of
Justice issued an advisory opinion to the General
Assembly on the legality of the Barrier route.
The Court
- concluded that the Barrier route running inside
the West Bank and East Jerusalem violated
international humanitarian and human rights law. - called on Israel to halt construction and
dismantle the parts it had built.
