All Quiet on the Western Front
  • Propaganda

2
Powerful Persuasion
  • Propaganda is all around you. Advertisers use
it. So do politicians and governments. They all
use powerful messages and techniques to get you
    to think a certain way.

3
Youve probably been persuaded and influenced by
these kind of propaganda techniques
  • Name Calling (Labeling)
  • Glittering Generality
  • Transfer
  • Testimonial
  • Plain Folks
  • Band Wagon

1. Name Calling (Labeling)Giving someone or
something a bad label. Used to make audiences
reject and condemn someone or something without
examining the evidence.
5
2. Glittering GeneralityAssociate something with
a virtue word to make audiences accept or
approve something without examining the evidence.
6
Glittering Generality
  • The slogan is so attractive that the audience
does not challenge its true meaning.
  • Ultra
  • The American Way
  • Family Values
  • New Improved

7
Virtues
  • prudence, temperance, courage, justice
  • love, hope, faith
  • kindness, abstinence, diligence
  • honesty, honor, bigger is better

8
3. TransferMaking something acceptable by
associating it with something that is respected
or approved of. (Also, making something
unacceptable by associating it with something
that is disapproved of.)
9
Transfer
  • Association with other people or groups that
already have high trust and credibility. Show
that you aspire to similar ideals.
  • As I was saying to the President, it is so
important that we bring our forces together. He
agreed, of course and we will be taking it
    forward next week.

4. TestimonialHaving a respected person say that
someone or something is good or bad
13
Testimonial
  • Testimonials are quotations or endorsements, in
or out of context, which attempt to connect a
famous or respectable person with a product or
    item.
  • The reputation or the role (expert, respected
public figure, etc.) of the individual giving the
    statement is exploited.

14
Testimonial
15
5. Plain FolksWinning an audiences approval by
claiming to be one of the people, the plain
folks.
16
  • America's recent presidents have all been
millionaires, but they have gone to great lengths
to present themselves as ordinary citizens.
  • Bill Clinton ate at McDonald's.
  • George Bush Sr. hated broccoli, and loved to
    fish.
  • Ronald Reagan was often photographed chopping wood

17
Plain Folks
18
6. Band WagonConvincing an audience that all
members of a group to which they belong are
accepting something, therefore, the audience
should follow the crowd and jump the band wagon.
19
Band Wagon
  • Everyone else is doing it, and so should you."
  • One of the most common techniques in both wartime
and peacetime and plays an important part in
    modern advertising.
