Earth Science

2
Get Familiar with the Standards
  • S5E1. Students will identify surface features of
the Earth caused by constructive and destructive
    processes.
  • A. Identify surface features caused by
    constructive processes.
  • Deposition (Deltas, sand dunes, etc.)
  • Earthquakes
  • Volcanoes
  • Faults
  • B. Identify and find examples of surface features
    caused by destructive processes.
  • Erosion (water-rivers and oceans, wind)
  • Weathering
  • Impact of organisms
  • Earthquake
  • Volcano
  • C. Relate the role of technology and human
intervention in the control of constructive and
destructive processes. Examples include, but are
    not limited to,
  • Seismological studies,
  • Flood control, (dams, levees, storm drain
    management, etc.)
  • Beach reclamation (Georgia coastal islands)

3
Isnt It Interesting????
  • Many buildings in Charleston, SC have earthquake
rods. These metal rods go through the building
to hold it together. There are bolts on the ends
of each rod that are visible on the outside walls
of the buildings. Most rods were added after the
    earthquake of 1886.

4
Plotting the Evidence
  • EQ What do the locations of earthquakes tell us
about the location of the Earths lithospheric
    plates?
  • Students will
  • Plot the latitude longitude for earthquakes and
    volcanoes
  • Examine patterns of earthquake volcanic
    activity
  • Infer locations of the lithospheric plates based
    on evidence

5
Quake Queries
  • EQ How can you use the Internet to find
    information about earthquakes?
  • Students will
  • Participate in an internet scavenger hunt where
they find the answers to specific questions about
    earthquakes from a USGS website.

6
Microorganisms

7
Isnt It Interesting?
  • It is estimated by the USGS that several million
earthquakes occur in the world every year.
    Heres a breakdown by magnitude
  • Mag. 8 1
  • Mag. 7-7.9 18
  • Mag. 6-6.9 120
  • Mag. 5-5.9 800
  • Mag. 4-4.9 6200
  • Mag. 3-3.9 49,000
  • Mag. 2-2.9 1000 per day
  • Mag. 1-2 8000 per day

8
Blocking the Flow
  • http//ga.water.usgs.gov/photo-albums/toccoa/index
    .html

9
Blocking the Flow
  • EQ How have we used technology to help us live
    with Earths destructive floods?
  • Students will
  • Identify locations of several dams in Georgia
  • Discuss benefits and drawbacks to placing dams on
    rivers
  • Compare and contrast levees and dams

10
Levees Little Book
11
Chalk It Up to Weathering
  • EQ How are rocks and minerals weathered?
  • Students will
  • Sort examples of weathering into categories of
    biological, chemical, and physical
  • Observe and describe physical chemical changes
    in the mineral calcite (chalk)
  • Identify examples of changes in rocks minerals

12
Bolders to Bits Little Book
13
Time for Change Little Book
14
Constructing Continents
  • EQ What evidence do we have that, over time,
    continents can move?
  • Students will
  • Solve a puzzle to construct Pangaea
  • Use a map to identify present day continents on
    Pangaea
  • Read explain what evidence Alfred Wegner used
    for this continental drift theory

15
Alfred Wegner Little Book
  • http//www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/geology/tecall1_4.mov
  • Movie of Earths Plates moving

16
Barrier Island Baffler
  • EQ How can we use logic to identify Georgias
major barrier islands and eastern coastal rivers?
  • Students will
  • ID the importance of GAs barrier islands
  • Use logic clues to ID the location of select
    barrier island and rivers
  • ID how constructive and destructive forces affect
    the barrier islands

17
