7Jim Collins Management guru to and author of
best seller Good to Great
In his highly impressive style full of in depth
pauses and high tone one liners he gave a new
dimension to leadership. He defined leadership
to be a level specific activity. He identified
five levels for leadership and considered the
transition from level four to level five most
difficult. The levels start from individual and
end up at the final results for the
stakeholders. He only stressed on results,
results and results with humility. He also
segregated success from leadership. He said
humility sets them apart. He mentioned that
greatness is not a function of your
circumstances, it is the result of your
conscious choice. He considered success to be
the major impediment in the path to greatness. He
also mentioned that celebrity status does not
warranty leadership skills also. In the
transitory stage from level four to level five
leadership , he said most of the executives
break on the will. He stated that it is the
power of the mission and importance of shared
values which lead a person to reach to that
level five leadership stance.
8- Mikhail Gorbachov Ex President USSR ,Noble peace
prize 1990
- He talked on global problems and asked to
separete old problems from new problems. - He unleashed his current commitment to focus on
following three problems only which are - worth concerning for each and everyone on earth.
- Security
- Poverty and
- Environmental safety.
- He also mentioned that a bigger challenge than
all these three put together is to find resources
- for Solving these problems.
- He talked on the global parities on income and
mentioned that 80 of the world resources - are in control of 20 people living in the
developed world. So key issue is on how to - mobilize these resources to rest of the world for
such causes. - He said that today the major threat is not from
any war or peace but from the environment. - Lastly he concluded that Leadership is not a gift
being served to you on a silver platter., - Neither it is stock which could be exchanged.
9- Ken Blanchard author of best seller The one
minute manager
He started on a very compelling note of You have
to be somebody before becoming Nobody. He said
even before thinking to be a leader one must have
a faith that he is unconditionally loved by the
almighty and he is the best for the role he is
playing and finally that he is not a junk
around. He said that in leadership right target
( the correct mindset ) is the key thing and the
profits is just the applause which you get out
of that mindset. He gave the mantras of Serve
and lead for the leaders and he made it very
clear that you can not get it right for your
customer before getting it right for your own
people. He said that the people at the customer
interface must be highly trained for sensing and
understanding the customer needs and then
fulfilling anyways without even thinking of
service manual. He gave the examples of
southwest airlines for the same. He also said
that for good leadership one should find a mentor
to get motivation. He said that value both
people and results. Walk and talk must
match. Getting distinct and delivering
differently is the key to successful leadership.
10Russel Simons CEO of Hip Hop
He gave his own vision for leadership as it is
the art of living authentically. Though he
talked very less but he talked direct and from
the heart. He gave all the credit of his
leadership to his power to imagine He said
Imagination is God. He straightly said that keep
only smart people around you and then you may
have a large chunk of visionaries around you. A
good leader always learn from his mistakes. He
said one should be open for learning anytime and
from any one as people come up in your life and
it is on you what you get out of them. One
should keep an eye on realities and the best
target comes out of the reality only. He said
that the only truth around is the popular
culture. You have to find their values and lead
accordingly with your offerings. Lastly he said
that imagine and dedicate yourself to the same.
11Peter Drucker
the ultimate management guru of modern times.
He gave a very short but purposeful
interview. He differentiated a professional
from executive by saying that a professionals
decision affects the work of his job only while
the decision of an effective executive affects
the work of others also in the
organization. He gave few steps for taking
decisions effectively and he also related
leadership with the ability to take right
decisions. Step I. Define the issue. If required
, take the feedback and correct the decision
also. Step II. Consider alternatives and make few
decisions but big decisions as every decisions
affect the organization ( both
positively and negatively). He also suggested
to train others on developing these
capabilities. Step III Expected Results should be
preconceived and accountability must be defined
before hand for each outcome. Defining
time frame is equally important as the
expected result. Step IV Prepare for success
Normally people prepare themselves for failures
but what happens if you get
successful and in less time. Lastly he said
that most of the books on decision making do not
talk about the results and how to handle results
therefore people fail in delivering.
12John C Maxwell Author of Confront your realities
He defined the leadership to be a process of
filling the gap between knowing and doing. We
exaggerate yesterday, we overestimate tomorrow
and we underestimate today. We overestimate the
outcome but underestimate the process. He coined
a new Law of process which says Leaders develop
daily and not in a day. He mentioned that our
interest in others is irresistible so focus on
others today. He also gave a trajectory of
realistic thinking, possibility thinking and
imaginative thinking . Great leaders make
important decisions early in their life and then
spend rest of their life implementing those
decisions. How can I add up value to someones
life today and who is that fellow today. Take
important decisions today . Make everyday as
your masterpiece.
13Rosabeth Kanther ex editor Harvard Business Review
She was the first one to emphasis the importance
of confidence for leadership. She defined
confidence as the expectation of success. She
also talked on her Kanther law which says that
everything seems to be a failure in the Middle
Confidence is the ability to wait till the end
expecting the success to come your way. She
talked of a very common trajectory of good to
great to complacent to slipping to declining to
turn around. Three cornerstones as identified by
her were Accountability Collaboration and
Initiative. Three magic words for getting
collaborative cornerstone ignited are admitting
I was wrong. Initiative is nothing but the
knowledge that we can create the
difference. Lastly she said that secret of
winning is loosing two times in a row.
