Title: Team 3 Adaptive Cruise Control

1
Team 3Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Project Goal
  • Our goal is to provide an after market product
that will prevent unnecessary braking while using
    cruise control.

2
Team 3 Members
  • Bryan Bandstra Nate Barker Erik
    Barton Nate Sportel Chris Vonk

3
The Problem
  • Highway travel with cruise control can be a
    constant struggle
  • Someone is always going slower
  • Constant button-pushing and brake tapping is
    required

4
The Solution
  • An Automated Cruise Control System (ACC)
  • Detects speed of impeding vehicle and adapts to
match its speed, keeping a safe distance
  • Re-accelerates to previous cruising speed once
    the way is clear

5
Alternative Solutions
  • Detection System
  • Laser
  • Reflection Issues
  • Range
  • Mm Wave
  • FCC regulations
  • Short Distance
  • Radar
  • Reliable
  • Directional
  • More expensive
  • Display Method
  • No Display
  • Easy to implement
  • No status updates
  • Not user friendly
  • LED Display
  • Easy to implement
  • Cheaper that LCD
  • LCD Display
  • Harder to implement
  • More expensive than LED
  • Coolness factor

6
Chosen Method
  • Radar
  • Reliable
  • Weather Resistant
  • Directional
  • LCD Display
  • User friendly
  • Touch Screen
  • Visually appealing

7
Important Design Norms
  • Transparency
  • Robust and Reliable
  • Weather
  • Temperature
  • Easy to use
  • Minimal interaction with user
  • Discrete
  • Not visible to user
  • Humility
  • Human Fallibility
  • Reduces risk for drivers on highways

8
Christian Principles
  • Stewardship
  • Uses less gas
  • Patience
  • Developed while waiting for impeding vehicle to
    get out of the way

9
Possible Extensions
  • Blind Spot Detector
  • Implement sensors on side mirrors to detect if
someone is in the vehicles blindspots

10
Obstacles
  • Interface with Cruise Control BUS System
  • Complex system
  • Only available in vehicles 2000 and newer
  • Brand Specific
  • Interface with Radar and LCD
  • Complex systems
  • DSP required
  • Weather Conditions
  • Must be able function in extreme conditions
  • Testing
  • Testing at full scale could be dangerous

11
Current Status
  • Research and Development
  • Choosing Components
  • Case Studies
