Star Formation
  • Exeter group.
  • Study of stars younger than 10 Myr,
    pre-main-sequence stars.
  • Low mass (lt 1M?) are T Tauri stars.
  • Higher mass are Herbig Ae/Be stars.

  • SBIG Spectrograph
  • Digital Dome Works remote dome rotation.
  • All run from PC in dome
  • Control room 100m away, uses VNC.

Work to Date
  • Most star formation work has concentrated on
    nearby regions (100 pc away).
  • Quiet backwaters forming only low-mass stars.
  • Most stars born in OB associations, nearest is
Orion Nebula (500pc) and most others 1000pc or
    more.
  • Building up a lot of data for lt 1M?
  • Information about interaction of star and disc.

27
Proposed Programme
  • To understand how Earth formed need ?1M?, in OB
    associations.
  • At 1kpc R5½ 10 15½ or brighter.
  • A few per OB association.
  • Look once per night every clear night, some
    longer runs.
  • Whats more they become radiative.

28
Problems.
  • Competition
  • LT, perhaps but rather bright.
  • Lack of good candidates.
  • Im only fishing.
  • Is is feasible?
