  • Occurs when a person has been exposed to
    traumatic event that involved actual or
    threatened death or injury to self or others
  • Responses will vary greatly from individual to
    individual
  • Responses may involve intense fear, helplessness,
    or horror

Following the event, the person may exhibit
  • Dissociative symptoms
  • Repeated re-experiencing of the event
  • Avoidance of any reminders of the trauma
  • Ongoing anxiety
  • Distress and impairment in social and
    occupational roles

  • Can occur
  • When conditions do not allow or encourage
    expression of reactions
  • when stress reduction mechanisms are not employed
  • Is most often associated with PostTraumatic
    Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Distress This term refers to the bad type of
stress (the opposite of Eustress) and occurs
when we have excessive adaptive demands placed
upon us.Distress may even cause dysfunction or
disease (meaning be pathogenic, or disease
producing), harming body and/or mind.

Eustress This is the good type of stress
(opposite of Distress) and refers to the optimal
amount of stress which helps promote health and
growth. Many times stressful events push us to
perform to higher levels and excelthis is
eustress.
