English Mock ExaminationsAQA Paper
1Specification B
  • Strategies to help you reach your potential

10
Be fully aware of what each paper involves
  • In your mock examinations this time, you will be
completing Paper 1. The focuses of this paper
    are
  • Pre-Release Media texts
  • Unseen non-fiction
  • Writing to Argue, Persuade and Advise

11
Media Texts
  • The first part of the examination tests students
skills of analysis when considering pre-release
media materials. Students will have access to
these texts before the examinations so will have
plenty of opportunity to study them, both at
    school and in revision.

12
Unseen Non-Fiction
  • The second part of the examination focuses on an
unseen text. Students are expected to read this
text, which will be in some way linked to the
pre-release media texts from the previous
section. They will be asked to analyse this text
using the skills they have learnt.

13
Argue, Persuade, Advise
  • In the last section of the examination, students
will be tested on their writing skills.
  • They will need to apply their skills in Writing
to argue, persuade and advise to respond to an
    issue.
  • This is the only section in which SPG (spelling,
    punctuation grammar) is marked.
  • Looking at past questions is very helpful for
this section. Ask your English teacher or visit
    the AQA website.

14
Study Guides AQA
  • The AQA study guide Reading non-fiction and
media texts has very useful revision materials.
However, the summary of the examination and
sample answers p40-55 are not what you will be
completing as we answer questions from a
    different specification.
  • The Glossary on p56-57 is very useful and can be
applied to any non-fiction that you decide to
    read in revision.

15
Writing Skills
  • You should also use the GCSE Writing skills
book to revise section 3 of the paper. Section 9
of this book is particularly helpful with these
    skills.
  • As well as revising your skills, you should also
practise your sentence structure, punctuation and
    attempt to develop your vocabulary

16
Coursework
  • To improve your English grade further before the
    summer examinations, consider rewriting any
pieces of coursework in which you feel you could
achieve a better grade. Consult your English
teacher in order to do this.
