3Eating disorders have become a problem in todays
society and especially among teenagers.
- Why do you think that some people your age have
a low self image?
4- Anywhere you look in today's society, there are
mixed messages about weight, eating, and food. - How do magazine covers contribute to this factor?
- How do restaurants contribute to todays obesity
problem in America?
5How can these people influence your self-image?
- For women, cultural influences seem particularly
powerful. Remarks made by parents, friends,
teachers or other authoritative figures can
result in distorted body images. - Singer Karen Carpenter reacted to a review
referring to her as chubby. From 1973, she began
losing weight, and her belief remained that she
was fat even when she weighed 80 lbs at 54. She
died in 1983 as a result of anorexia and bulimia.
6Anorexia
- Anorexia is an eating disorder where people
starve themselves to lose weight.
Does Anorexia affect girls only or do you think
boys are affected too?
What are some reasons anyone would want to starve
themselves?
7Annas Story
- I felt totally controlled by an anorexic voice
in my head that sounded just like my Grandmother.
It told me I was fat and ugly and had to starve
myself. It yelled loudly every time I ate,
repeatedly telling me I was a very bad person. I
was now completely obsessed with food and did
everything possible to avoid eating.
Is Anorexia something you can control or does it
control you?
8Obesity
- Obesity is defined in adults as having body fat
as a percentage of body weight greater than 25
for men and 30 for women.
Can obesity be caused by something other than
overeating?
What are the dangers of obesity?
9Bulimia
- Bulimia is characterized by episodes of binging
followed by vomiting, fasting, enemas, excessive
use of laxatives and diuretics, or compulsive
exercising.
Can you always tell if someone is bulimic? Why or
why not?
What are some possible causes of bulimia?
10A College Student
Do you believe that someone who is a triathlon
athlete could have eating disorders?
- I'm a 21 year old college student that is one of
the most active people you will ever meet. I love
to race in triathlons, mountain bike, rock climb,
sky dive, lift weights, you name it.. But,
everyday I wake up and I hate to look into the
mirror. I don't like the person I see. When I get
really hungry, I go into my kitchen and eat tons
of food. Then, I feel guilty and throw it all up.
I work out for three hours a day. That is my
life. I started to do triathlons so I would get
to work out even more with out people questioning
me. So, when people look at me and talk to me,
they comment on how healthy I am. But I know the
truth!
Do you think this student is a male or female?
11Steroids
- Some research has shown that 5 of teen boys and
2.5 of teen girls have used some form of
anabolic steroids
Why would teenagers use steroids knowing the
problems it could cause such as impotence and
sterility?
12Are you where you want to be in terms of looks,
grades, athletics, and popularity?
- What are some ways you can improve your
self-image?
13- Summary If you or someone you know suffers from
an eating disorder, then, it is necessary to get
help. Tell someone you trust to get that help,
like a teacher or counselor. - Overeaters Anonymous and Anorexia/Bulimia
Anonymous can offer support to supplement
treatment. - Relapse is common, and impulses to restrict
eating or over exercise can be life-long. - Just remember Your life is too high of a price
to pay!
