Title: Movement Development : Manipulative Movements

1
Lecture 5
  • Movement Development Manipulative Movements

2
Review Week 4
  • Normative information from age-related charts is
useful for being aware of when children may need
    outside support
  • Individual ( internal and ecological) issues
    influence individual childrens progress
  • Sequences are stable and can be used as a frame
    of reference for planning programs

3
Objectives Week 5
  • Awareness of normative development in
    manipulative movements
  • Review individual ( internal and ecological
    factors influencing individual progress
  • Apply the travel map-sequence concept to
    manipulative movements

4
Manipulative Movements
  • Mainly fine motor, with some gross motor elements
  • Reach-grasp- release
  • Mainly gross motor plus some fine motor elements
  • Against resistance e.g.push-pull-lift
  • Receipt/propulsion e.g.throw-catch-kick

5
Infant Development
  • Palmar reflex, tactile (hand mouth)
  • Visually directed reaching, touching, grasping-1
    2 hands
  • Intentional release
  • Poking,pulling
  • Shoulder stablity

6
Toddler Development
  • Feature perception
  • Palmar tripod grip
  • Stacking inserting
  • Fill empty
  • Manipulating e.g. with self-feeding, toys
  • Throw scoop large ball towards body

7
Experience 1 Try out and Discuss
  • Try reaching for an item without shoulder
stability, then with joint stability at elbow or
wrist level. Note the amount of finger control
    you have
  • Try out palmar and tripod grips, and discuss the
size of toys which may be appropriate

8
Experience 1 Feedback
  • Did you find you had to hold each joint
(shoulder, elbow, wrist) to feel whether it was
stable or not? Was there a significant difference
    in control at each level?
  • Did you think that the difference between
suitable toys for various grips was also related
to the childs hand size / vision?

9
Preschool Development
  • Detail awareness
  • Pincer grip,dexterity
  • Finger separation
  • Hand dominance
  • Eye hand coordination
  • Throw and catch medium ball, kick, throw to large
    target

10
Junior Primary Development
  • Rhythmic temporal
  • Dynamic tripod grip for writing effectively
  • Joint rotation e.g. turning small items
  • Range of self help
  • Controlled throw
  • Bounce, dribble, strike

11
Experience 2 Try out and Discuss
  • Try drawing, using your pen in a pincer, tripod
and dynamic tripod grip. What made an effective
    mark with a thin pen?
  • Now try it without using your other hand to
    stabilise the paper. What happens?
  • Try throwing /catching from the shoulder then
elbow then wrist. What do you notice?

12
Experience 2 Feedback
  • Did you find that using both hands was important
in drawing? Why? What did each hand do? What if
    you swapped hands?
  • How did the action change when you threw or
    caught using different joint stability?

13
Remember - Individual Variations
  • Individual variations related to issues internal
to the child ( e.g. maturation, health,
    disposition, personal abilities)
  • Individual variations related to ecological
influences ( e.g. parental expectations, climate
    and location constraints, availability of
    facilities, centre program emphasis)

14
Developing a Sequence Chart - Manipulative
Movements
  • Prepare a travel map 0-8 years, with four
    sections( one per age group)
  • Locate normative data from study book and texts
on the travel map, noting source (e.g.
    throw-catch-bounce)
  • Write the full reference in the reference list at
    the back of your folio.

15
Folio Problem Solving
  • CONTENT
  • Non-locomotor data is hard to obtain - make just
one travel map in this movement area
  • Not much 0-2 in throw-catch etc - put some
    grasp/release
  • PRESENTATION
  • Lot of information bunched in first 2 years-
adjust travel map space to cater
  • Part B resource ideas very skills based. Add some
    more strategies.

16
Video on Fine Motor Manual Development
  • Note the combination of fine and gross motor
developments, and perceptual issues for each age
    group
  • Note the experiences and materials which the
    children use
