Title: Developmental Reading Assessment DRA2 Grades K 3

1
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2) Grades K
3 Grades 4-8 FBISD 2007-2008
2
  • What is the DRA2?
  • A method for assessing and documenting students
    development as readers over time
  • Assessment is done during one-on-one reading
conferences using a leveled set of texts

3
DRA2 assumes students
  • are learning that reading and writing are
    reciprocal processes
  • are immersed in rich literate environments
  • hear a variety of literature read aloud
  • read independently for a sustained period of time
  • respond to literature in a variety of ways
  • receive reading and writing instruction in whole
  • and small groups

4
DRA2 Assesses Reading Behaviors in an interactive
one-on-one reading conference
  • Step 1 Assess Reading Engagement by
  • Teacher asking oral questions OR
  • Students completing the reading survey
  • Step 2 Assess Oral Reading Fluency by having
student read aloud specifically selected books
    and recording his/her
  • Accuracy
  • Phrasing
  • Expression and Rate
  • Step 3 Evaluate Comprehension by
  • Student retelling story or writing a summary
  • Student answering questions to determine how well
    he/she
  • understood the story (literal and inferential)
  • Step 4 Analyze student reading behavior to
  • Identify strengths and needs
  • Areas that need improvement

5
Purpose of Using the DRA2
  • Observe, record, and evaluate students reading
    abilities
  • Determine independent reading level and students
strengths and needs within that level
  • Guide continued reading growth
  • Identify trends among readers for instruction
  • Establish school and district wide standards for
    evaluating student progress
  • Align assessment with district curriculum to
    provide a common
  • language between grade levels and campuses
  • Create a forum for sharing strategies among
    teachers

6
DRA2 is looking for characteristics of good
readers
  • Good readers
  • Select appropriately leveled reading materials
  • Read and sustain their reading for longer periods
    of time
  • Preview a book before reading it and predict what
    might happen
  • Read aloud quickly and smoothly
  • Use a variety of strategies
  • Read for meaning
  • Read and function within a literacy community

7
DRA
  • Teacher selected text
  • No student writing
  • Student read and retold text
  • only. No other level of comprehension was
    assessed.
  • No reading engagement questions or reading survey
    given
  • Teachers did not assess students on their
    predictions
  • Text Levels A-44, fiction only
  • Student selects a text that seems just right from
a range of texts chosen by the teacher
  • There will be a written response on levels 28 and
    above
  • Teachers will assess student responses in 3 major
areas Reading Engagement, Oral Reading Fluency,
and Comprehension (comprehension is comprised of
    predicting, previewing, oral and written
    retelling, making connections, reflection,
    nonfiction text features, interpretation, and
    meta-cognition)
  • Students respond to questions about what they are
    reading and their preferences
  • After reading aloud a designated passage,
students predict what they think will happen or
questions they think will be answered.
  • Text Levels A-80 Nonfiction books are now
    included at levels 16, 28, 38, and 40-80

8
