Title: Your future with hp systems
1Your future with hp systems
- Open Source Solutions A Government Initiative
2Your future with hp systems
- In 2003, Linux and Open Source will go
mainstream as cost-sensitive IT Executives
discover Linux on Intels compelling economics.
Smart CIOs will set aside the religious wars to
see the truth Open Source is good enough for
many datacentre tasks - Forrester Research, Inc. Jan 2003
3Your future with hp systems
- Why Open source, and why now?
- Open Source has passed the good enough point.
- Anchored in Internet BIND and SendMail.
- Do the Rewards outweigh The Risks?
4Your future with hp systems
- Strategic Planning The Key Questions
- Whats different about OSS?
- Which Open Source products should firms use?
- Whats the right Open Source deployment strategy?
- Which Vendors can help with Open Source?
5Your future with hp systems
- Whats different about OSS?
- Development Scientific Methodology published
results, peer review, etc. - Licensing Typically FREE. (Other costs need to
be considered documentation, support, commercial
add-ons, etc.) - Support Choice Distributors (Red Hat/SuSE)
Hardware Vendors (HP/Dell, etc.) Software
Vendors (SAP/Oracle, etc.) Traditional Systems
Integrators CSL.
6Your future with hp systems
Open Source Impact
- Development Process
- License terms
- Feature selection
- Pace of Innovation
- Relationship to Standards
Scientific Method Typically FREE Community
Driven Always Incremental Standard by
definition
OSS can benefit from 000s of developers Major
Cost Savings Portability improves, but at the
expense of some functionality Maintains
stability Accelerates the adoption of Standards
7Your future with hp systems
- Which OSS products should firms use?
- Open Source to bet on
- Linux HP (and IBM and Dell) offer and support
Linux on their Servers. - Apache Apache web servers host 60 of public
internet sites. - PHP Popular web scripting language is a natural
on Apache
8Your future with hp systems
- Which OSS products should firms use?
- Open Source Representative Watchlist
- SAMBA File and Print software serves Windows
clients. - Jboss J2EE application server
- Tomcat Java servlet engine.
- mySQL RDBMS.
- Eclipse Developer Workbench
- Swish-E Video search Tool
- Qmail An easier Sendmail?
- JFS Journalising File System for Linux
- OpenOffice Desktop solutions
9Your future with hp systems
- Whats the right Open Source deployment strategy?
- Fund an Open source competency centre (and staff
it with Sceptics) - - Demystify licensing manage code roll-outs
maintain policy. - Treat OSS deployments more rigidly than
commercial ones - Dont modify OSS code unless you want to join the
(development) community.
10Your future with hp systems
- Which Vendors can help with Open Source?
- Standardise on a Linux distribution Red Hat or
SuSE - Use Infrastructure Giants for broad support HP
claims 5000 Linux Service professionals. - HP Support available thro Partner Channel e.g.
CSL
11Your future with hp systems
- The Rewards do outweigh The Risks!
12Your future with hp systems
- Rewards
- Low Cost. The fee for using Open Source Software
is typically very low, just enough nto cover the
distribution and support cost. - High Quality. The scientific method development
process encourages large numbers of developers to
look at the same code base. The result is rapid
problem resolution and bug fixes. - Wide Choice. Because the Source Code can run on
many different hardware platforms, users gain
tremendous control over which hardware they run.
Risks Dead-end Software. Open Source projects
may fail to gain or retain large numbers of
coding volunteers, which could lead to a dead
product. Fragmentation. Code base may fork
(be split into multiple projects) which could
lead to incompatible versions. In practice, this
rarely happens because developers would rather
improve than revolt.

Linux usage models expanding over time
14Your future with hp systems
- The commercialization process of OSS will be
gradual during the next five years. - Gartner Research July 2003
15Your future with hp systems
- Open Source Software - Today
-
- Technically sound/Philosophically challenging
- Cost Effective
- Provides Choice
- Co-existence
16Your future with hp systems
- the website of the Open Source Initiative, the
guys who define what open source is
- the government website for IT related stuff,
including open source (and where the gov. open
source policy stuff lives)
- the (techie) website where you can find all open
source projects, download code, etc
- the Apache Software Foundation website (Apache
web server, PHP script, etc)
- Open Source Development Network website.
Good portal for latest open source news, events,
etc (IT/techie biased)
- www.redhat.com, www.suse.com,
- websites of commercial companies offering linux
distributions
- website will grow into significant open source
resource
- plus, of course, HP, IBM, etc......
