Introduction Story
On August 12, Her Majesty the Queen will
celebrate her 73rd birthday, and the whole
kingdom will join in on this special occasion.
This day also marks national Mothers Day.This
weeks exercises column takes a closer look at
Her Majestys reign and her tireless efforts to
help improve the well-being of all Thais. Read
this story.Then, work with a friend to complete
the exercise and discussion questions that follow.

Queen of hearts Celebrating the life of
Thailands mother. This mothers Day, Thais will
gather at Sanam Luang in Bangkok and at other
provincial offices throughout the country to
light candles and sing songs in celebration of
Her Majestys birthday. Queen Sirikit, or Somdej
Phra Nangchao Sirikit Phra Boromarajininat, was
born Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakala on August
12,1932 to Colonel Mom Chao Nakkhatra Mangkala
Kitikara and Mom Luang Bua Kitiyakara in
Bangkok. The Queen attended Saint Francis
Xavier, a Catholic convent school. During her
childhood, Her Majesty moved to Europe with her
father, who was the Thai Ambassador to France,
Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Her Majesty continued her studies in these
countries and in Switzerland, where she met His
Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was also
studying in Switzerland. When the King was in
hospital recovering from a car accident, Her
Majesty was a frequent visitor. His Majesty and
the Queen were engaged on July 19,1949.On April
28,1950, the royal wedding took place at
Pathumwan Palace. MOTHERY LOVE
Like His Majesty the King, Her Majesty is
immensely popular and deeply respected in
Thailand.

The Queen is very active in many of her own
projects-for example, the Sai Jai Thai
Foundation. Her Majestys care and compassion
shines through as she visits wounded soldiers,
policemen and civilservants. Sometimes she event
gives her personal attention to there
problems. The Sai Jai Thai Foundation also looks
after the families of those who have died in
service to their country. In addition, Her
Majesty is the president of the Thai Red Cross
and has also been active in relief work for the
many refugees from Cambodia and Burma who have
sought safe haven in Thailand.

ROYAL SUPPORT
In addition to her charitable work, the Queen is
also involved in helping poor families whose
incomes are dependent on agriculture. She has
encouraged them to use their artistic skills and
resources to produce local handicrafts by
establishing the Foundation for the Promotion of
Supplementary Occupation and Related
Techniques(SUPPORT). There are many centres
throughout Thailand. The most notable is the Bank
Sai Handicraft Centre in Ayutthaya. With her love
for the people, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit truly
deserves to be regraded as the mother of all
Thais.
