There are 3 Kinds of Mayors

• Ceremonial Mayor
• -The Ceremonial mayor have no broad goals
• -Make little effort to set an agenda
• -Usually, they deal with problems individually

Caretaker Mayor

• -Builds political alliances
• -Surrounds themselves with loyal staffs
• -Let his/her own daily agenda be dictated by
  other people

Crusader Major

• -Ambitious personality
• -Strong political power house
• -Have a very detailed agenda for short-termed and
  long-range yearly objectives

Richard J. Daley

• He was a crusader mayor. He was elected in 1955
  and reelected 5 times after that.
• He is known for perfecting the Cook County
  Democratic Party Machine.
• Daley was one of the best American Mayors.

• Using a political machine to govern a large city,
  Daley began to rejuvenate Chicago piece by piece.
• First, he started a massive building campaign
  that rebuild the loop. To provide many
  Chicagoans better jobs and to put money back into
  the citys economy.

• He helped construct and mentally build OHare
  airport, which is the second largest airport in
  the US.
• He also built other great things such as the
  First National Bank building, Water Tower Place,
  Sears Tower, and Illinois Circle Campus.

The Political Machine Failures

• In the late 1960s the civil rights and the
  anti-Vietnam movements begun. Daley not knowing
  how to deal with them got some negative feed back
  resulting in loud protest marches, embarrassing
  confrontations, bad publicity, etc.

• Daley never dealt with racial problems so in a
  result, the problems fested and gain momentum.
  So segregation still existed in the school and
  housing areas. He tried to integrate the
  neighborhoods by building affordable housing
  around the loop area. (projects)

Concluding

• In concluding Major Richard J. Daley was one of
  the best Majors in Chicago. His vision for
  Chicago has changed Chicagoans in many ways.
  After his death, the staff tried to keep the
  machine going but the failed.
