Title: At the WBE04 conference,

1
First International Workshop on Authoring of
Adaptive and Adaptable Educational Hypermedia
  • At the WBE04 conference,
  • 19 February, Innsbruck, Austria

2
Authoring of Adaptive and Adaptable Educational
Hypermedia Where are we now and where are we
going?
  • Alexandra Cristea
  • a.i.cristea_at_tue.nl
  • http//wwwis.win.tue.nl/alex/

3
Major Questions of the Workshop
  • Why should we look at the authoring process in
    adaptive educational hypermedia design?
  • How does detecting authoring patterns help the
    process?
  • Why do we need to consider cognitive styles in
    adaptive hypermedia?
  • What do these seemingly unrelated topics have in
    common?

4
Goal of workshop
  • to attract interest of the related research
communities to this important issue of design and
    authoring in adaptive hypermedia, and
  • to discuss the current state of the art in this
    field.
  • These discussion should lead to a better
understanding and formulation of the possible
patterns to extract from the authoring process in
    AH.

5
Organization
  • Only a few papers selected for presentation
  • Presentation lasts max. 10 min
  • Discussion of paper max. 5 min
  • List of major questions, open questions, and
    pattern description task distributed
  • Next, discussion on workshop major questions,
    based on papers
  • Discussion on open questions
  • Discussion on pattern descriptions
  • Hand-in pattern descriptions, list of major
    open q. (!!)

6
Outline
  • AEH
  • Adaptation questions
  • AEH authoring questions
  • Workshop themes papers
  • Patterns
  • Open questions

7
AEH
  • Adding personalization (flexibility) to an
    otherwise inflexible educational environment

8
Adaptation questions
  • what kind of adaptation should be done?
  • to what this adaptation should respond?
  • and, to the more technically oriented
  • When? and
  • how this adaptation should be performed?

Answer with the author!!!
9
Authoring AEH
  • State of art?

10
AEH authoring questions
  • what functionality? (minimum for enough
    flexibility)
  • AEH components creation order
  • how to reduce the authors load? (without
    decreasing flexibility)
  • repetitive steps saved reproduced automatically
  • reuse materials adaptive techniques and
    pedagogical approaches

11
Workshop Themes and their Motivation
  • Good practices of user modeling based adaptation
    in education (1)
  • Basis of AEH authoring (UM main driving force
    in AEHs)
  • Ideally, authoring tools should at least
reproduce the most successful AEHs built so far.
  • Authoring of adaptive/ adaptable educational
    hypermedia (2)
  • Next step Authoring methods (and tools) for AEH
(several types, to be analyzed compared)
  • Design patterns for educational adaptive
    hypermedia (2)
  • Authoring patterns in adaptive/ adaptable
    educational hypermedia (1)

12
  • Connecting AEH to learning and cognitive styles
    (3)
  • Because patterns can be found at higher level
  • Collaboration authoring issues for adaptive/
    adaptable educational hypermedia (1)
  • Between authors
  • Patterns can allow it because patterns allow
    reuse.
  • Adaptation model transformations between adaptive
    educational hypermedia systems (0)
  • Patterns allow transformations between AEHs (as
    in Open Hypermedia)

13
Workshop paper order
  • Start past good practices of AEHs which we
would like to reflect in our model of authoring.
  • C. Conati A. Bunt, Student Modeling for Open
    Learning Adaptive Hypermedia
  • Then authoring problem how this was solved up
    to now,
  • P. Cristea, R. Tuduce C. Popa, Test Authoring
    for Intelligent e-Learning Environments
  • P. Karampiperis D. Sampson, Knowledge Modelling
for Adaptive Content Selection in Educational
    Hypermedia Systems,
  • We try to extract patterns of authoring directly
    from the authoring process.
  • A. Moore, C. Stewart, D. Martin, T. Brailsford
    H. Ashman, Links for learning linking for an
    adaptive learning environment

14
  • One step of abstraction further transforming
authoring patterns into design patterns for AEH.
  • P. Avgeriou, D. Vogiatzis, A. Tzanavari S.
Retalis, Design Patterns in Adaptive Web-based
    Educational Systems an Overview
  • Among them interesting high-level patterns
    based on learning styles
  • P. Paredes P. Rodriguez, A Mixed approach to
Modelling Learning Styles in Adaptive Educational
    Hypermedia
  • N. Stach, Incorporating Cognitive Styles in AHA!
    (The Adaptive Hypermedia Architecture)
  • Finally extensions for AEH authoring for
    collaboration.
  • M. Kravcik M. Specht, Authoring Adaptive
    Courses ALE Approach

15
Pattern
  • each pattern describes a problem, which occurs
over and over again in our environment, and then
describes the core of the solution to that
problem in such a way that you can use this
    solution a million times over.

defined by Christopher Alexander in 77
16
Pattern analysis
  • name,
  • problem,
  • context,
  • forces,
  • solutions,
  • related patterns and
  • known uses

17
Open questions
  • How to correctly extract authoring patterns for
    AEH?
  • implications of this extraction of patterns?
  • It is evident that it is not really possible to
create authoring tools for every situation and
adaptation method the limitation being given by
    authoring tool design constraints.
  • Aim
  • making the authoring process easier,
  • various different systems compatible with each
    other.
  • functionality patterns need to be evaluated.

18
  • We are very pleased to have gathered experts to
discuss these issues within the workshop and are
hoping for useful results from these discussions.
