  • Day 11
  • Responding to an Emergency

Brake Failure
  • Pump Brake pedal rapidly, may create enough
    pressure to give some brakes
  • Use parking brake with hand on release at all
    times, apply gently, not to lock wheels
  • Down shift and use engine braking
  • Steer against a curb or go up a hill
  • Side swipe something softish

Other Brake problems
  • Riding the brakes can cause brake fade
  • pull over and let them cool off
  • Puddles can cause temporary brake failure
  • to dry brake ride you brakes lightly for a few
    seconds

Engine Failure
  • If engine stalls, signal and pull over to curb as
    quickly as possible, try to start engine, if it
    wont start, raise hood and call for help
  • If you flood your engine with too much gas, push
    pedal all the way to the floor in try starting
    your car, if that fails, wait for 10 minutes and
    try again
  • If engine gets wet, turn of ignition, leave hood
    down, and try starting after a few minutes

Overheated Engine
  • If engine overheats
  • turn off all accessories, especially A/C
  • Pull off to side of road, raise hood to cool
    engine
  • May turn on heater to draw heat away from engine
  • Get professional help
  • Do not add anything until engine is completely
    cooled

Tire Loses Pressure
  • Keep firm grip on steering wheel, dont brake,
    pull off to side of road, run emergency flashers,
    change tire
  • Put car in Park and set parking brake
  • Loosen lug nuts, then jack up car
  • remove lug nuts and replace tire, put lug nuts
    back on
  • Snug down lug nuts and lower car, tighten lug
    nuts as tight as possible, fix tire

Accelerator Pedal Sticks
  • Apply brakes shift to neutral, engine will race
    but wont accelerate car
  • Steer off to side of road and shut car off
  • Unstick pedal if possible once stopped, if it
    doesnt work call a service professional

Hood Flies Up
  • Lean forward and look through gap between hood
    and car, or look out the window
  • Check traffic and pull off to side of the road
  • Close hood, make sure it is latched this time

Car On Fire
  • Steer off the road to open space and shut car
    off, have everyone get out
  • If not serious and you have a chemical fire
    extinguisher handy, open hood and put out fire,
    DONT USE WATER on engine
  • If fire in passenger compartment, steer off road
    and put out with extinguisher or water

Dead Battery
  • Make sure battery is not frozen or low on fluid
    or could explode if jump started
  • Order of connections
  • Positive good, positive bad
  • Negative good, ground(not battery) bad
  • Start good car, try to start dead car
  • Once started go in reverse order

Headlight Failure
  • If head lights fail at the same time, try
    switching to high beams,
  • If that doesnt work try parking lights
  • If that doesnt work use emergency flashers to
    give enough light to get pulled off the road,
  • try to park in a lighted area and call for help

Waiting for Help
  • Make others aware of your problem by raising
    hood, using emergency flashers and warning
    triangles if available
  • If someone stops to offer help that you dont
    know ask them to go ahead and call for a tow
    truck or law enforcement officer DONT OPEN
    YOUR CAR TO STRANGERS!!!!!

First Aid Procedures and Guidelines
  • Scan scene and decide if you can help, call
    emergency services 911 or 55
  • Tend to most seriously injured first
  • Keep injured calm
  • Try to stop serious bleeding if possible
  • DONT MOVE ANYONE UNLESS THEIR LIFE IS
    THREATENED!!!!!
  • Do what you can until professional help arrives

Controlling Bleeding
  • A Hemorrhaging person is one who is bleeding
    heavily
  • Apply direct pressure to wound
  • Try not to touch their fluids

Shock
  • If person feels faint, cold clammy skin, weak
    fast pulse is a sign of shock
  • Keep victim warm, but not too warm, cover with
    blanket or jacket.
  • Do not give them anything to eat or drink

Other Helps
  • Learn CPR and know the basics
  • Carry a first aid kit in your vehicle and keep it
    well stocked.
