Title: Occupant Protection System

1
Occupant Protection System
  • Seat Belts
  • Air Bags

2
Why are occupant protection systems so important?
3
Dynamics of a Crash
  • Every vehicle collision include three crashes.
  • Vehicle Crash
  • Human Crash
  • Internal Crash

4
Vehicle Crash
  • Vehicle buckle bend
  • Comes to abrupt stop
  • Front end absorbs some force of the crash
  • Passenger comp. absorb rest of the force

5
Human Crash
  • Upon impact unbelted occupants are still
    traveling at vehicles original speed.
  • After the vehicle stops, unbelted occupants
collide with the interior of the vehicle and into
    each other.

6
Internal Crash
  • After occupants body come to a complete stop,
their internal organs are still moving forward.
  • Suddenly these organs slam into other organs and
    the skeletal system

7
Safety Belts Air Bags
  • They protect you by absorbing the force of a
    crash.
  • They help you stay in control of your vehicle by
    keeping you in your seat
  • They increase your chance of surviving a crash by
    more than 50 percent

8
Occupant Protection Safety Check 1
  • What to do
  • Make sure all adults and older children are
buckled up using both shoulder and lap belts
  • Why
  • To protect everyone in the vehicle and preventing
back seat passengers from becoming human bullets
    should a collision occur

9
Occupant Protection Safety Check 2
  • Secure infants and young children in the proper
child safety seats, always in the back.
  • If not properly restrained, they may be thrown
about in a collision and suffer serious injury or
    death

10
Occupant Protection Safety Check 3
  • Close and lock all doors and tailgates
  • Unlocked doors and tailgates may open during a
    crash.

11
Occupant Protection Safety Check 4
  • Keep front seat backs upright
  • Reclining the seats reduces the safety belt
effectiveness. In a crash you may slide under the
belt, or be clotheslined as you fly into the
    shoulder belt

12
Occupant Protection Safety Check 5
  • Properly adjust the head restraint
  • The head restraint helps protect your neck and
head, especially in a rear end collision.

13
Air Bag Safety Tips
  • An air bag deploys faster than the blink of an
    eye.
  • 1. Adjust seats so your chest is at least 10
inches away from the steering wheel.
  • 2. Adjust tilt steering wheel towards your chest,
    not at your head.
  • 3. Adjust front passenger seat as far back as
    possible from the dash.
  • 4. Place infants in the back seat in a properly
    installed rear-facing child safety seat.
  • 5. Make sure children under 12 ALWAYS ride in the
    back seat.
