Work experience
Project
The project gave Justin a great opportunity to
put into practice some of the skills he was
developing on the Diploma. His best friend was in
a band and felt the time was right to go public -
so Justin seized the opportunity to be their
self-appointed manager! He researched suitable
venues for their first gig, drafted the format
for the concert and identified (and costed) the
technical equipment required to help ensure it
was a success. He also produced marketing
material and prepared and sent a press release to
the local newspaper advertising the
concert. Finally, after the concert, Justin
conducted some informal interviews with members
of the audience to find out their views on the
venue, promotion and content of the gig. Using
the feedback he produced a review of the concert
- analysing key areas of improvement for any
future events.
Justin was fortunate to get the opportunity to
conduct his work experience with the local TV
station. He initially worked with the production
crew who produced the regional news programme and
conducted a tour of the facilities with a primary
school who were visiting the studio. He then
spent a period of time with the boom operator,
learning all about how to maintain sound quality
during recordings. He was given the opportunity
to record a shot, realising how difficult it was
to remain outside the action and the importance
of working to fine tolerances.
He also spent a few days with an independent
production company who were developing a new
sitcom. He learnt how commissioning worked and
was confident enough to make suggestions to the
scriptwriters. Finally he was asked to evaluate
his work experience so that the studio could
improve on any future placements. This was
conducted with the education officer and felt
more like an audition than a review!
AND... principal learning functional skills
personal, learning and thinking skills ASL
Progression route Justin was keen to continue
his development and applied for a job as a
trainee sound recordist hopefully as a launch pad
for an exciting career in the media industry.
This is a highly competitive sector so Justin is
looking at university courses to boost his
prospects further.
