Law Enforcement Agencies
  • Iowa State University Department of Public Safety
    (DPS)
  • Police Division (ISU Police)
  • Parking Division

  • ISU Police is the primary law enforcement agency
    for all matters and incidents that occur on ISU
    property.
  • ISU Police is staffed with 33 full-time, state
    certified peace officers.
  • Police service is available 24-hours a daywe
    never close.

  • ISU Police emergency contact number is 911.
  • If you are calling 911 from a cellular telephone
    ON CAMPUS, state your location FIRST as the call
    may first go to the Ames Police Department.

    your call will go directly to ISU Police.
  • If you activate one of the emergency telephone
    stations on campus, your call will go directly to
    ISU Police.

Guidelines for Interaction with Law Enforcement
  • Driving
  • You are required by law to yield to all emergency
    vehicles by pulling over to the RIGHT of the
    roadway and stopping.
  • Police

  • Ambulance

  • If the police vehicle stops behind you, put your
    vehicle in PARK and roll down your drivers side
    window.
  • Stay in your vehicle and wait for the officer to
    approach your vehicle.
  • You will be required to provide three (3) items
    to the officer which include

  • Valid drivers license or permit
  • If you are driving on a permit, you must have
    another person with you in the vehicle that has a
    valid drivers license (two permits do not equal
    a valid drivers license).
  • Registration to the vehicle you are driving.
  • Current insurance card and/or statement
    indicating that the insurance premium has been
    paid.

  • If you are issued a citation/ticket for a traffic
    violation
  • Do not attempt to negotiate or try to give the
    officer moneythis is illegal.
  • Sign the citation/ticket. Failure to sign the
    ticket will result in you being arrested.
  • If you do not understand what the ticket is for,
    ASK THE OFFICER.

  • Both front seat passengers must wear seatbelts
  • All children under 49 must be in a safety seat
    or booster seat
  • Babies under 1 year of age should be in a
    rear-facing safety seat
  • Toddlers and small children should be in a
    front-facing safety seat

  • It is illegal to consume any type of alcohol
    while driving.
  • If you plan on drinking, do NOT drive.
  • Over 21 years of age, legal limit is 0.08.
  • Under 21 years of age, legal limit is 0.02.
  • If you possess a commercial drivers license, the
    legal limit is 0.04.

  • Avoid distractions while driving
  • Cellular telephones (no texting)
  • Passengers
  • Traffic Collisions/Accidents
  • Call the police immediately. Do not allow the
    other driver to talk you into not reporting.
  • If you think the driver is going to leave, write
    down their license plate number.

Personal Safety
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • If you have to walk at night, stay in a group or
    walk with a friend.
  • Call for a Safety Escort 515-294-4444.
  • If walking alone
  • Avoid dark areas
  • Look at where you are going, not at your feet
  • If you are listening to your iPod, turn it down
    low so you can hear whats going on around you.
  • If you have a backpack, put only ONE strap over
    your shoulder.

  • Trust your instincts
  • If someone asks you a question or wants to speak
    with you, remain at least two arms length away
  • If you do run into trouble
  • Attract attention any way you can by yelling or
    screaming.
  • Shout Call 911 or Fire
  • Once you are out of danger, contact the police
    IMMEDIETLY.

  • When answering the door, always ask who is there,
    or use the peephole if you have one.
  • Dont just open the door without first checking
    who is on the other side.
  • Always let a significant other, roommate,
    co-worker or friend know where you are going and
    when you plan on returning.
  • Do not be predictable. Take different routes
    home, class, work, etc.

  • Under Iowa law, it is illegal for an individual
    to threatened and/or harass another person.

    legitimate purpose.

  • Any act which is intended to cause pain or injury
    to, or which is intended to result in physical
    contact which will be insulting or offensive to
    the other.

  • Shred any credit card applications that you do
    not want.
  • Do not carry your passport or social security
    card with you on a daily basis.

    for a few minutes

    others may see it.

    State Gym, use lockers and secure them with a
    lock.

Property Crime
  • Theft
  • The most significant property crime on campus
  • When theft occurs, contact the police.
  • On campus, contact ISU Police
  • Off campus, contact Ames Police
  • Be prepared to provide the dispatcher and officer
    with your name, address, and telephone number.

  • Any damage that occurs to your property that is
    not caused by you.

Prevention
  • It starts with you
  • When leaving your room or apartment, keep your
    keys with you at all times.
  • Do not lend your keys to anyone, especially if
    you do not know them well.
  • NEVER prop doors open for any reason unless
    instructed to do so by a public safety official.
  • Report ANY suspicious activity and/or persons to
    the appropriate law enforcement agency.

Conclusion
  • If you are a victim of a crime, notify the police
    right away. Successful apprehension of the
    offender(s) diminishes significantly as time
    advances forward.
  • Enjoy your time at Iowa State University, but do
    not forget your personal values, health and
    safety.
