  • Most historians date the beginning of the modern
civil rights movement in the United States to
December 1, 1955. That was the day when an
unknown seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama refused
to give up her bus seat to a white passenger.
This brave woman, Rosa Parks, was arrested and
fined for violating a city ordinance, but her
lonely act of defiance began a movement that
ended legal segregation in America, and made her
    an inspiration to freedom-loving people
    everywhere.

Harriet Tubman
  • Harriet was unable to read or write but was able
to help free over 300 slaves from the south using
    the underground railroad.
  • Harriet was born into slavery, but felt so
strongly that it was wrong and wanted to find a
way for her people to become free.

Harriet Tubman
  • In 1849 Harriet escaped from her plantation and
arrived in Pennsylvania a free woman.
  • After her arrival she started to save her money
so that she could help other slaves escape the
south so they could be free.
  • She made 19 secret trips with the help of her
allies to free over 300 people.
  • She became known as Moses and there were
rewards from slave owners for her capture, but
    she was never caught.

7
Carrie Chapman Catt
  • Carrie graduated from college in 1880, and was
very determined to help with the womens suffrage
    movement.
  • Womens suffrage was the movement that legalized
    voting rights for women.

8
Carrie Chapman Catt
  • Carrie worked as an organizer for the National
American Woman Suffrage Association from 1890 to
1900, when she became its national president.
