• 1,180 Americans will die from tobacco use in the
  next 24 hours
• Each day 3,000 teens smoke their first cigarette
• The average age a person starts smoking is12
• There are over 4000 chemicals in tobacco-more
  than 50 are carcinogens

• Smoking is the number one gateway drug
• Teens who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in
  their lifetime, would like to quit, but
  cantaddiction
• Nicotine is the second most addictive drug next
  to crack cocaine

Cost of tobacco use

• 1 in 5 Americans who die each year, die from
  tobacco use
• 27 of Americans who die between the ages of
  35-64 die from tobacco related diseases
• Tobacco excise taxes are reliable source of
  incomeyes, for every 10 increase in the tax,
  the smoking rates fall 7 for teens and 6
  overall
• AdvertisingThey are always truthful about smoking

Youth Smoking, Health and Performance

• Can hamper the rate of lung growth and
  functioning
• Resting heart rates are 2-3 beats per minute
  faster than teen non-smokers
• Younger a person starts, the more likely they
  will become addicted to nicotine
• Compared to non-smoking teens, teens who smoke
  are 3x more likely to use alcohol, 8x more likely
  to use marijuana and 22x more likely to use
  cocaine

• Cancers-lip, esophagus, larynx, pancreas, and
  stomach

• 50 x more likely to get oral cancer
• These cancers can form within 5 years of use

• Heart disease

Fact about Indiana and Smoking

• 31.6 High School students smoke
• 19,600 kids under 18 become new daily smokers
  each year
• 420,000 kids exposed to second hand smoke
• 22.7 million packs of cigarettes smoked or bought
  each year by kids.

• 10,200 adults die each year from their own
  smoking
• 167,00 kids now under 18 and alive in Indiana who
  will ultimatley die prematurely from smoking
• 950-1690 adults, children and babies who die each
  year from others smoking
