Network-Based (Cell-Sector)
  • Based on use of cell coverage areas, taking into
account the tower location and cell geography.
  • Benefits
  • Readily available today
  • Compatible with all handsets
  • Limitations
  • Variable measurement uncertainty (urban to
    suburban)
  • Accuracy
  • 250m - 20000m
  • Remarks
  • Adequate for many applications

7
Network-Based (AFLT)
AFLT Advanced Forward-Link Trilateration
  • Based on handset measurements obtained from
  • three cell towers and reported to network element
  • for location calculation.
  • Benefits
  • Medium accuracy as a standalone solution
  • Enhanced when combined with AGPS
  • Limitations
  • Requires modification to MS software
  • Network synchronization impacts performance
  • Accuracy
  • 200m - 450m
  • Remarks
  • Unique to CDMA networks

8
Handset-Based (A-GPS)
AGPS Assisted Global Positioning System
  • Based on use of determination of signals
transmitted by the GPS satellites. Mobile
receives assistance data (e.g. list of
    satellites in view) from network.
  • Benefits
  • Highest accuracy achievable today
  • Limitations
  • Coverage mainly outdoors
  • Terminal impact (HW/SW)
  • Accuracy
  • 10m - 250m
  • Remarks
  • Suitable for high-end applications

content, applications, and service providers to
    offer revenue-generating location-based services
    solutions to mobile operators.
  • Allow partners to interface and test their
applications, and certify that their applications
    are location-enabled.
  • Promote local.info Alliance partners and their
integrated solutions to mobile operators around
the globe, in order to develop this market
    worldwide.

  • Presence

Presence is the aggregated view of a persons
dynamically changing attributes under total
control of the end user
19
Presence and Location
Presence in the Market
  • Presence and Instant Messaging are truly
disruptive technologies to the wireless and wired
    worlds
  • Jeff Pulver, Pulver.com
  • By 2004, 60 of allcommunicationvoice or
textwill be driven through instant messaging
    technology
  • Gartner
  • One of the most powerful and distinguishing
features of the IM protocol is presence
    detection
  • Bill Gates, Testimony to FCC on AOL/Time Warner
    Merger
  • Online presence awareness is the most important
    and enduring technology of IM
  • IDC
  • Presence is the source of future windfall in
the form of call connection and increased minutes
  • Sounding Board

20
Presence Standards
  • SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is emerging as
the protocol of choice for setting up
    conferencing, telephony, multimedia and other
types of communication sessions on the Internet.
  • SIP may also be used for new types of
communications, such as instant messaging and
    application level mobility across various
networks, including wireless, and across user
    devices.
  • Work on SIP is accomplished primarily in the IETF
SIP working group, and at SIP bake-offs.
  • SIP has however manifold interactions with other
areas, such as the next generation wireless
    internetworks, QoS, payments and security

Zonemaster byUnwiredfactory A Case Study
23
Zonemaster -- Case Study
  • Launched with Orange in Denmark
  • November 1st, 2001
  • Access media
  • (MO) SMS, STK, WAP, WEB (settings, community and
    info)
  • Pricing
  • Premium charging on key requests i.e. create
    battle, create player, attack, scout
  • Competition
  • Some competitions with prizes!

24
The Game-play
  • A quest for zones using fierce androids.
Zonemaster is a "battle for land" which takes
place in the real world, on real maps, utilizing
    a real physical location.
  • The game-play is about conquering zones (like the
    board-game RISK)
  • Attacking strength is the number of zones owned
by someone multiplied by the strength of the
    android summoned with the phone.
  • On the website one can see the maps of the cities
being played in. These are real world maps. One
can also see the Androids and who holds the
different zones on the maps AND much, much
    more...
  • Two Ways to Play
  • Orange battle Defined game areas (ie.
Copenhagen). This can be used for competitions
    for prizes.
  • Personal battle User creates their own
    battlegrounds from their physical location

25
Game-tutorial
  • STEP 1 A desire to battle!
  • Select an Orange battle in your area or create
    your own.
  • Remember you have to be physically present in
the zones you want to attack.

STEP 2 Attack! When you are physically in a
zone you want to conquer, use your mobile to
spawn an android and the attack will
commence.Your fighting strength depends on two
factors Your strength and which android you
spawn. Androids will only be spawned when you
attack.
26
Game-tutorial
  • STEP 3 Keep conquering!
  • Travel around in the real world (city) to find
new zones to conquer. If you meet a defender too
strong you can get an ally to help you.

STEP 4 Winning a battle Battles either end on a
predefined date or when a player has gained
control of a certain percentage of the
battlefield.
27
City Maps
This is one of the five cities in Denmark
Copenhagen shown as a real map .
28
Real Maps
The Grid is done according to actual cell
locations in the city. The cells become the
zonesyou can conquer.
29
Important learning points
Zonemaster A Case Study
  • Zonemaster was developed and deployed within two
months in cooperation between Orange Denmark and
    Unwiredfactory
  • Zonemaster has demonstrated it has a profitable
business case with a committed effort in getting
    prizes and doing marketing
  • Zonemaster creates a leading edge reputation for
    the operators
  • Subscribers get value-for-dollar entertainment,
and come back again and again in the quest for
    nice prizes
  • Subscribers adapt quickly to LBS games, a good
way of educating them on LBS technology and its
    possibilities
  • Multi-user gaming is a killer app...
