Moving to and from Curbs
  • Check Visibility, Time, and Space
  • Signal
  • Head check
  • Steer away or to curb
  • Accelerate or decelerate as necessary

Driving up and down hills
  • Uphill - increase pressure on accel., if manual
    you may need to down shift for more power
  • Downhill - may need to move selector to lower
    gear for auto, down shift before going down steep
    hills in manuals
  • Dont use cruise in hilly areas

Mountains
  • Faced with steep grades, sharp curves
  • Be extremely careful when passing
  • Higher altitude - less oxygen affects both car
    and body, things heat up faster, you may feel
    dizzy
  • Dont ride brakes going down hills, may heat up
    and fail.

Changing lanes
  • Manage visibility, time and space
  • Check mirrors
  • Signal intent to move

Preparing Executing Right Turn
  • Check, Choose, Communicate,Position
  • Signal your intention
  • Check for a 7-8 sec gap in traffic to left
  • Recheck traffic
  • start turning when wheels are even with curb,
    keep eyes on intended path of travel
  • Follow general curve of curb
  • Reverse steering and check signal

Preparing Executing Left Turn
  • Check, Choose lane, Communicate, position
  • Check for vehicles, peds, bikes, etc.
  • 9 sec gap to right, 7 sec gap to left
  • Proceed into intersection, look to intended path
    of travel and steer towards it
  • Complete maneuver by reversing steering and
    checking signal
  • Always turn from closest lane to closest lane

  • Movement is one continuous move, no backing

Angle Parking
  • Stay 5 feet from cars
  • when you can see down the drivers side of the car
    steer sharply and proceed slowly
  • Straighten the wheels and align with cars on
    both sides
  • Always keep looking for clearance on both sides
    of your vehicle

Perpendicular Parking
  • Stay 7 - 8 feet from vehicles
  • Start turn when front bumper is even with back
    driver side of car you are parking next to, drive
    very slowly keeping track of clearance.
  • Leaving spot, start turning when you are even
    with back bumper, watch the front of your car.

Parallel Parking
  • Stay about 3 from cars, stop when center posts
    are even or when backs of cars are in the same
    spot.
  • Turn sharply to the right and back up slowly
  • When you get even with the rear bumper steer
    sharply in the other direction, watching the
    front of the car
  • Center car in space nor more than 6 from the curb

Parking in other spots
  • Driveway - do not park over sidewalk or in other
    peoples driveways
  • Garage - just like perpendicular parking, may
    want to put something to help you stop
  • Make sure it is legal - cant park at bus stops,
    loading zones, double park, in yellow zones
    around fire hydrants, in handicapped areas
    without a permit

Parking and Hills
  • Automatic - shift into park and set parking brake
  • Manual - Place vehicle in a gear opposite of
    direction front end is pointing in and set
    parking brake
  • Down Hill with or with out curb - turn tires
    toward curb or ditch
  • Up Hill with curb - turn tires away from curb
  • Up Hill without curb - turn tires toward ditch
